A woman was criticized online after leaving her child with her ex and his partner and not returning, resulting in the police being involved.
The Original Poster (OP), known as u/GlitteringBall2429, posted about the situation in Reddit‘s popular “Am I The A**hole” forum where it received nearly 14,000 upvotes and 1,200 comments. The post can be found here.
Child Neglect and Abuse
In 2020, more than 3 million children—or about 43 out of every 1,000 children—either received an investigation or “alternative” response due to neglect or abuse, according to the Department of Health and Human Services.
Of these responses, more than half were found to be unsubstantiated while nearly 18 percent of children were victims of abuse or neglect.
The Child Maltreatment Report published by the Administration for Children and Families, younger children are the most at risk of neglect or abuse, with about 25 percent of victims being under the age of 1.
‘Baby Daddy Bailed’
In the post titled “AITA for calling the cops because no one picked up the kid I was babysitting?” the OP said they and their boyfriend took in his ex’s child overnight last minute after the kid’s father canceled on her.
“She had plans with her friends for the night and we weren’t busy so we took him overnight when the baby daddy bailed on her,” the post read. “We told her we had brunch reservations the next morning at 11 and while we were happy to help, she needed to pick him up by 9am. She knew this and agreed when she dropped him off.”
After not hearing from her until 10 a.m., when she finally answered the phone to tell them she had the “worst hangover” and wouldn’t be able to pick up her son until 2 p.m., although they live about 15 minutes apart.
“We remind her of our brunch reservations and she tells us to take him with us!” the post read. “This kid is 2 years old, it is not enjoyable to take a child this age out to eat. My boyfriend cancels our reservations and gets ready to have this kid until she decides to pick him up.”
OP said they were furious since this child was neither their’s nor their boyfriend’s, so they called the woman and said that if she didn’t pick him up by noon they would call the police to collect her child.
They added that they are unable to drop off the child because the woman lives in an apartment building that requires access from a resident.
“She calls me a b**ch. I then told her she had 30 minutes to come get him,” the post read. “I waited an hour and there was 0 sign of her. So I called the cops and told them I was babysitting and I don’t know where his parents are, they were supposed to be here 2 hours ago.”
The OP said police treated the situation the way they would with a lost child, adding that the child was taken to the station.
“Little miss finally rolls up at 3pm and gets belligerent when she discovers I had actually called the cops and gave her child to them!” the post read. “She calls me all sorts of wonderful names and storms down to the police station.”
In an update, the OP added that the child’s mother is “also neglectful” and this was their “last straw.”
“She’d maybe change his diaper twice throughout the whole day (on a good day) and multiple times I’d seen her refill a bottle that hadn’t been cleaned in days with actual rotten milk inside,” the update read.
More than 1,200 users commented on the post, many praising the OP for contacting the police when the child’s mother never arrived.
“NTA. I’m very glad you called, because this woman very much needs CPS to be keeping an eye on the health and safety of her child,” one user commented.
“She was warned you would call the police and still rolled up late to her suggested late pickup time. I just feel bad for the kid being put through this scary experience,” another user commented. “You and your boyfriend might want to consider a security system.”
“NTA. You had an agreement. She broke it. You gave her fair warning. She ignored it,” another commented.
“Someone had to call either the police or CPS to get at least a paper trail started on this woman. I’m glad you did,” another commented. “If mother’s don’t want their children, they need to give them up for adoption, not pull bulls**t like this so they can go out partying…”
