Ardfert Historical Society

We want to thank most sincerely all who came and supported last Sunday’s Launch of the Michael J. Cavan exhibition at Ardfert Cathedral. The exhibition was launched by Norma Foley, T.D. and Minister for Education and she gave a very thoughtful and well received speech. We were also delighted to have in attendance Donal Kavanagh, a relative of Mickie Cavan who travelled from Cork for the event. Years of work behind the scenes has gone into sourcing, collecting, scanning, and digitizing and framing the many pieces of art which so many people carefully stored and minded for many years. The idea for the exhibition originally came from Lillie O’Sullivan who was the owner of a lot of Mickie’s work, and she took on the task of producing the beautifully illustrated catalogue, which is now an historic document.

The exhibition can be visited all this week at Ardfert Cathedral where the paintings etc. will remain on display until Sunday 21st August. The catalogues will be available to buy in due course for €10 at Ardfert Cathedral, Ardfert Print shop, Horgan’s Centra, Clifford’s Farm Shop, Liscahane Nursery and Lerrig Stores.

We are grateful to everyone who helped in any way over the last few days getting the paintings displayed and organising everything on Sunday from the Office of Public Works and staff at Ardfert Cathedral, stewarding and traffic control, providing bottles of water, photographers, catalogue sellers, videographers and local media, singer Caroline O’Callaghan and musician Donal Stack, Steve Baker who did all the framing of the pictures, Ardfert Community Centre, Ardfert Camera Club, Ardfert N.S., Eamon Ferris, Liam Dalton, Jnr., Kanturk Printers and so many more who offered support and practical help in many ways. We would also like to say a special thank you to Seán Mac an tSíthigh (TG4 and RTE video journalist) for his coverage of the event.

The Michael J. Cavan Project Committee: Nuala Kelly (Chairperson AHS), Anne Kearney (Treasurer), Donal Stack, Steve Baker, Tommy O’Connor (M.C. for the Launch), James O’Loughlin, Paddy Stack (Secretary AHS), Mike Lynch, Josephine O Riordan (PRO).

Our next outdoor event is the Casement Trail Part 2, which takes place this Thursday 18th August and will be led by Pat Lawlor and will cover Casement’s Fort and his route to Ardfert village. Meeting at Casement’s Fort at 8pm.
