2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E proves to be an approachable vehicle for those looking to make the EV ownership leap

Not only is the Mustang Mach-E the first modern electric vehicle that Ford Motor Company has made, it wears badging that automatically, and rather controversially, links it to one of the most desired sports cars of all time. To say that the model has a lot to prove is an understatement.

The first Mustang Mach-Es out of the gate are First Edition models that boast extended all-electric range, all-wheels drive, red painted brake calipers, metallic pedal covers, contrasting seat stitching, and a scuff plate that features the words “First Edition”. It carries a $59,400 price tag.

The First Editions have a battery under the floor of the car that allows it to achieve 270 miles of all-electric range. Its electric motors give it 346 horsepower and 438 pound-feet of torque. With figures like that, there’s no doubt that in combination with the rapid acceleration an EV powertrain naturally provides, the Mustang Mach-E can be a hoot when you put the pedal down.

But, that doesn’t happen all the time. Most of the moments spent behind the wheel are either short trips to stores or schools, running errands around town, or commenting. In those scenarios, the Mustang Mach-E also proves up to the challenge, providing manageable acceleration in city driving and one-pedal driving, where only the accelerator is used to regulate speed unless sharp braking is required, is easy to get used to.

Dynamics are sharp enough but don’t rival sports cars in any way. Parking is easy thanks to plenty of greenhouse and a connected steering experience. Unlike older versions of the Toyota Prius, the Mustang Mach-E doesn’t drive like it’s burdened carrying its own weight around.

It’s the moments behind the wheel when the Mustang Mach-E really shows what it’s made of. The Ford is the closest electric vehicle (EV) to a traditional internal notions of a car that we have. The seating position is not unlike what you’ll find in small crossovers like the Hyundai Venue and Kia Soul.

Being at the wheel feels natural. Thought it’s hard to put a finger on exactly what makes this EV so different from others on the market today to deliver the feeling that it does, it seems to be the right combination of established technology, in the right places, utilized in simple ways that makes the car immensely approachable, even for someone with no EV ownership experience.

There’s no yoke steering wheel, basic functions remain the same as on other traditionally-powered vehicles, the shifter is standard rotary fare. Materials are similar to what you’ll find in other Fords. For its price point, the Mustang Mach-E First Edition feels suitably premium, though other automakers do premium better, and the crossover contrasts with earlier hybrids and EVs in the industry that put fuel economy ahead of interior design.

The crossover comfortably seats four adults, unlike its Mustang counterpart. Ford has given the model 29.7 cubic feet of cargo space, which is good, but isn’t going to rival any of the big SUV sellers like the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4.

Centered on the dashboard and extending lower into traditional center stack space, the 15.5-inch infotainment touch screen provides all the information a driver could need aside from what is offered in the minimalistic instrument cluster. Menus take some getting used to, but the SYNC 4 system, with its swipe and pinch functionality, is as uncomplicated to use as an iPad. The screen goes dark during the evening but proves distracting to a driver day or night because of the large amount of information on it and the precise way touch is required to perform functions.

Charging the Mustang Mach-E is a combination of finding the right type of charger to fit your needs and paying either via the charging company’s app or utilizing Mustang Mach-E’s plug-and-charge feature.

The car’s navigation system allows search functionality for charging stations, showcasing them by type, provider, location, and distance from where you are or are headed. This easy-to-use charger-finding functionality works quickly and efficiently for the user thanks to sensible controls, responsive touch screen options, and easily readable displays.

The Mustang Mach-E First Edition is sold out, but other versions of the car are available, starting at $42,895 before destination and delivery charges are added on. A new, more performance-focused version of the model, the GT Performance Edition, will begin arriving at dealerships in the coming months.

If you’re in the market for an EV or just want to give EV ownership a try, you can do a lot worse than owning or leasing a Mustang Mach-E.
