Watch hair-raising moment runaway bin lorry misses dog walker by inches

This is the terrifying moment a driverless, runaway bin lorry hurtles down a busy Birmingham street.

Rolling through oncoming traffic, a dog-walker only realises the danger at the last moment, jumping out of the way as the out of control truck smashes through a wall.

The incredible footage caught on a dashcam by Victoria Williams shows an refuse truck, with no driver on board, speeding up down Jockey Road in Sutton Coldfield, forcing motorists to reverse.

The incident took place shortly before 8am on Wednesday (September 15) after Victoria had dropped her children off at school and was heading down Jockey Road towards Boldmere, while on her way to work.

Driving in her Mercedes A Class, the 38-year-old was following a blue Corsa over the railway bridge before heading towards a bend, around which the drama unfolds.

As her car turns the corner you see a Birmingham City Council refuse truck just crossing the white lines in the centre of the road.

The blue Corsa goes past a bus stop and beyond the junction with Britwell Road, when the driver of that car is forced to take action.

He slams on his brakes. Meanwhile, you see a dog walker with two pets calmly walking on the pavement.

The dog walker was just inches away from being hit by the driverless bin lorry which had been hurtling out-of-control down Jockey Road and across Britwell Road in Sutton Coldfield

As the Corsa driver slams the car into reverse the bin lorry has fully crossed to the wrong side of the road. It travels at a slight angle seemingly about to be involved in a head-on collision.

The Corsa driver reverse swerves the vehicle out of the way and, as the truck mounts the pavement, bearing down on the pedestrian, the dog walker leaps out of the way.

West Midlands Ambulance Service said it was not called to the incident and West Midlands Police said it attended and is investigating.

A Birmingham City Council spokeswoman said: “The cause of incident is being investigated and thankfully no-one was hurt.”
