Aston Villa have been told that imminent arrival Leon Bailey would be a ‘perfect’ option to play up front next season.
Villa confirmed that an agreement has been reached with Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday afternoon, with the club paying a fee of £30m to the German club.
Bailey is now set to undergo a medical and discuss personal terms before completing a move to Villa Park.
The 23-year-old impressed in the Bundesliga last season, scoring 15 goals and providing a further 11 assists from wide areas.
That prompted reported interest from a number of Premier League clubs, with Villa now closing in on a move.
Should the transfer go through, former Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor has suggested that a surprise role could be in line for the new arrival.
“I said this at the end of last season, Villa do need another forward,” he told Football Insider . “Keinan Davis is a good prospect, Wesley’s not going to get the game time and doesn’t really offer Villa that pace.
“You can’t rely on Watkins to play 38 games and not get injured, it’s not fair on him.
“Bailey would be perfect, a top forward. He would add great competition in the squad and would allow Dean Smith to sometimes play two up front.
“It would be a great signing and one that I hope Aston Villa can get through.”
Villa have been linked with a number of strikers this summer, including former loanee Tammy Abraham.
The 23-year-old looks set to move on from Chelsea this summer and has been linked with a move to Arsenal. He is said to be available for a price of around £40m in the current transfer window after finding game time hard to come by under Thomas Tuchel last season.
