Villa injury news and return dates as Bailey responds to update

Aston Villa are back in action when they play Manchester United on Saturday (12.30pm).

Villa head to Old Trafford on the back of a penalty shoot-out defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night.

The Red Devils, meanwhile, lost to West Ham United in the Carabao Cup with Manuel Lanzini netting the winner after only nine minutes.

Villa thumped Everton 3-0 last time out in the Premier League with three goals scored in nine minutes.

Leon Bailey sparked Villa into life when he was brought off the substitute’s bench in the second half, forcing an own goal and rounding off the scoring with a net-busting left-footed strike.

But he had to come off with eight minutes left to play with fears of a quad injury to the Jamaica international who missed two games earlier in the campaign with a hamstring injury.

Villa suffered a couple of injury worries at Chelsea with Morgan Sanson coming off before half-time on his return to the starting lineup and Jaden Philohene-Bidace going down late on, although he completed the game.

Carney Chukwuemeka returned to the matchday squad and came on for Sanson, leaving Trezeguet (knee) and Keinan Davis as Villa’s other injury worries.

Here’s the latest ahead of Villa’s trip to Old Trafford…

Leon Bailey

Injury: Quad

Target return date: TBC

What we know: Bailey picked up the injury in the 3-0 win over Everton at the weekend. Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez uploaded a video to Instagram of Bailey getting interrupted while receiving treatment by a club physio with the player responding with three laughing emojis.

What Bailey said: “The injury was actually from the shot – I think I hit it too hard so I started feeling a little stiff in my quad. But I don’t think it should be anything serious. Instead of risking it I decided to come out – because we have a lot of games coming up. So no worries.”

Injury: Knee.

Target return date: No return date yet pencilled in but still faces several more months on the sidelines.

What we know: Villa will be expecting Trezeguet back at some point this season after undergoing surgery on a serious knee injury involving ligament damage in April. He has been training on the grass at Bodymoor.

What Smith said: “He’s had a significant knee injury which is normally nine months. We never like to put a time frame on injuries, but that’s the average time to come back. Some come back earlier, some come back later.”

Keinan Davis

Injury: Unspecified.

Target return date: Reports claim he could be out until the start of October.

What we know:Davis picked up the injury in pre-season, reportedly scuppering a loan move to Stoke City, but is out of a brace.
