Coronation Street viewers got a major blast from the past tonight when Sharon Bentley made a dramatic return to the cobbles.
Sharon, played by Tracie Bennett, hasn’t been seen in Weatherfield since 1999 when she left for Bolton.
But she turned up tonight to tell foster mother Rita – who she hasn’t talked to since leaving – she has been nominated for a Golden Heart Award.
She now wants to make amends with her family – but there are suspicions she may not be telling the full truth about why she is back.
Sharon – the foster daughter of Len and Rita – might be best remembered behind the till of The Kabin, which Rita gave to her as a birthday gift.
She fell out with Rita’s assistant Leanne Battersby there, and fell out with Rita when she sold the shop back to her and left for Bolton.
The pair haven’t spoken since.
Sharon was also married to Ian Bentley – after first jilting him at the alter.
She had discovered he was having an affair with Natalie Barnes so ditched him.
They later got back together and got hitched.
Tracie told The Mirror : “I am absolutely thrilled to be returning to the cobbles. It is a dream come true for me, I had such an amazing time there and I am looking forward to working with Barbara again and getting my teeth into the storylines they have planned for Sharon.
“I was first approached about coming back about 18 months ago, I was keen and excited to see what was in store but my work schedule and then the pandemic has meant that it has taken till now for it all to come together.
“I am so pleased that I can finally tell everyone as it has been hard trying to keep the secret.”
