Aston Villa transfer latest as Dean Smith provides update

Here’s the latest Aston Villa transfer news and rumours over the last 24 hours.

Sarr blow

Tottenham Hotspur are in ‘advanced’ negotiations for Aston Villa linked Pape Matar Sarr, according to reports.

The 18-year-old has been linked with a move to the Premier League this summer, with the likes of Manchester City and Manchester United also credited with an interest.

However, it now seems that Tottenham have jumped to the front of the queue.

RMC Sport via Get French Football News report that Spurs are ‘very far along’ in their discussions with Metz for the player.

A deal is being reported as greater than £8.6 million but Metz would like to increase that transfer fee to £17m including add-ons.

Hasenhuttl’s Ward-Prowse comment

Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl has said that James Ward-Prowse’s new contract at the club is a signal that the Saints are able to keep hold of their best players.

Villa were heavily interested in the Southampton captain this summer, seeing bids rejected for the England international.

The midfielder has since put pen to paper on a new five-year contract at St Mary’s.

It comes after Southampton sold both Danny Ings and Jannik Vestergaard this summer, with the duo heading to Villa and Leicester City respectively.

“I have never had the thought he could leave us to be honest,” Hasenhuttl said of Ward-Prowse.

Smith’s transfer update

Dean Smith has said that a couple of players are likely to head out of Villa Park in the final days of the transfer window.

Both Conor Hourihane and Frederic Guilbert were missing from the 20-man squad for last week’s game against Watford and could be candidates to move on over the next 10 days.

“I still believe there’s a couple of players that will probably move out before the end of the month but we’re comfortable with where we are,” Smith said.

We’ve got pretty much cover for positions all over the pitch and it’s a stronger squad than it was last season.”
