Wilshere reveals transfer talks with Bruce

Former Arsenal midfielder and current free agent Jack Wilshere has revealed Steve Bruce tried to sign him when he was the manager of Aston Villa.

Wilshere has defended Bruce for the criticism he has faced in the Newcastle hot seat, claiming the ex- Villa boss ‘knows his football’ and is a ‘football man’.

Bruce’s position as Newcastle manager appears to be hanging by a thread with conflicting reports on whether he will be in charge of the team against Tottenham on Sunday for his 1,000th game in management.

The purchase of the club by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund reportedly makes Newcastle the richest football club in the world, but Bruce is not seen as the man to begin the new era.

“It’s harsh,” Wilshere told talkSPORT. “I’ve never worked with him, I’ve played with players who have played for him and have nothing but good things to say about him.

Villa coach leaves for Wolves

Highly-rated coach Mike Scott has left Aston Villa to join West Midlands rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers, BirminghamLive can reveal.

Scott has started work at Wolves’ Compton Park training base in his new role as head of coach development.

He only joined Villa as under-16s boss and head of youth development last summer after leaving Championship club Derby County.

Before Scott linked up with Derby in 2019 he was part of West Bromwich Albion’s academy set-up, where he worked alongside current Villa chiefs Mark Harrison and Steve Hopcroft.

The Solihull native spent 11 years with West Brom, seven of them as professional development phase coach.

During that time he worked with many players who have risen to prominence such as Nathan Ferguson, Dara O’Shea, Kyle Edwards and Rayhaan Tulloch.

Scott was under-18s boss in the latter stages of his Baggies career, leading the team to the FA Youth Cup semi-final in April 2019, the club’s first in 41 years.

A number of ex-Albion coaches have made their way from The Hawthorns to Villa Park over the last two years, but Scott has now been lured away from Villa.

Merson: Villa ‘waiting to explode’

Paul Merson claims Aston Villa are ‘waiting to explode’ after what has been an indifferent start to the new Premier League season for Dean Smith’s team.

Former Villa’s midfielder Merson believes Smith’s side will be prove tricky customers for any Premier League side this season and has backed them to beat Wolves at the weekend.

Villa are unbeaten on home soil so far this campaign having topped both Newcastle United and Everton and drawn to Brentford. They’re looking for their fourth win of the season against Bruno Lage’s side, but could be leapfrogged by Wolves in the Premier League table if they lose at Villa Park on Saturday afternoon.

Despite losing Jack Grealish to Manchester City over the summer for a record Premier League transfer fee, Villa’s £95million worth of investment in attacking trio Emiliano Buendia, Danny Ings, and Leon Bailey has drawn plaudits.

Though, all three summer buys are yet to play a single minute of action with last season’s top scorer Ollie Watkins and that paints the picture as to why Merson believes the best is still to come from Smith’s side.

Luiz ‘happy’ at Villa despite no new deal

Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz was heavily linked with a move away from the club over the summer.

Italian giants AS Roma were credited with an interest towards the end of the transfer window as they looked to bring in a new midfielder following Jose Mourinho’s arrival at the Stadio Olimpico in the summer.

Arsenal’s Granit Xhaka was close to joining Roma but that move never materialised.

Luiz will be out of contract at Villa at the end of next season and unlike some of his team-mates who also signed for the club in 2019, he is yet to agree fresh terms with Villa.

Roma could make a move when the January transfer window opens in the New Year but Villa would not want to sell a player who has begun the season in sparkling form.

When Luiz joined Villa upon the club’s promotion back to the Premier League for a fee of £15million from Manchester City, the Premier League champions inserted a buy-back option in the deal.

That option to buy Luiz back for a fee of around £30million expired on June 5, 2021, but Luiz hasn’t penned a new deal at Villa Park even though he will enter the final 12 months of his current deal in the summer.

After weeks of speculation linking him to a move away from Villa, Luiz took to Instagram to reassure supporters that he was focused on the Premier League season ahead.

Luiz posted on social media at the start of September: “I’m happy here.”
