Aston Villa play their penultimate away match of the season this lunchtime – a Premier League trip to Crystal Palace.
The game comes just three days after Dean Smith’s men drew 0-0 with Everton on Thursday night and comes with one week of the season to go.
Attention has already started to slide towards the summer transfer window, with the rumour mill heating up earlier than ever.
Five new players were signed last summer in another splurge on transfers as Dean Smith looked to increase the amount of quality in his squad.
After promotion was confirmed in 2019, Villa had to replace a raft of players who left and sign new talent capable of competing in the top flight.
Now Villa have a crucial summer ahead, planning for next season knowing the owners’ desire to improve once more.
Here’s all the latest transfer news on Sunday, May 16:
Rene Meulensteen believes Manchester United should allow Paul Pogba to leave Old Trafford and invest the proceeds in any sale in rebuilding their squad.
And Sir Alex Ferguson’s former No. 2 believes Jack Grealish is the kind of player who would help Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team, possessing the ‘DNA for play for Man United’.
Grealish to United is hardly a new transfer line for either clubs’ set of supporters, nor is it even the first, second or probably third transfer window Aston Villa ’s captain has been linked with the Red Devils.
United are thought to be in the market for another attacking option this summer and after an excellent season in which he made his England breakthrough, the talk is inevitable.
Meulensteen said: “A player like Grealish, he would have the DNA to play for Man Utd and the stature for it and he would have the ambition but it would change the outlook of the team. He is a ball hogger, he likes to dribble and create things for himself.”
Tom Heaton will not be short of offers if he ends up leaving Aston Villa this summer.
The 35-year-old has been extensively linked with a move back to Manchester United over the past few weeks, with the Red Devils looking to bolster their goalkeeping department this summer.
And the Daily Mail have suggested United’s fierce rivals Liverpool were offered a chance to take the England man as back-up to Alisson Becker.
The report claims the Reds have offered Adrian a new deal but the 34-year-old has the chance of becoming first choice at Real Betis and that Jurgen Klopp wants to send Caoimhin Kelleher out on loan next season.
However, Heaton is claimed to be close to agreeing terms with United where he took his early steps as a professional before leaving for Cardiff in 2010.
Villa have been handed a massive boost in their bid to sign Abraham.
Abraham has been left out of the FA Cup squad to face Chelsea today, report The Telegraph.
That is despite Blues boss Thomas Tuchel being able to name 20 players in his matchday squad.
It is another blow to Abraham’s chances of becoming a regular under the German having been left out of the squad for the semi-final with Manchester City last month.
Abraham’s time associated with Chelsea could indeed be coming to an end, something that has become more apparent since Tuchel succeeded Frank Lampard at the club.
In the final game of the legendary midfielder’s tenure, a 3-1 FA Cup win over Luton, he scored a hat-trick. Yet Tuchel’s arrival didn’t coincide with a continuation of Abraham in the side – the likes of Werner and Olivier Giroud have both been ahead of him in the new order and there has been Kai Havertz to contend with too.
Indeed there have been plenty of weeks where he hasn’t made the matchday squad with yesterday Wembley snub particularly pointed.
Only recently, Tuchel has handed Abraham minutes from the bench late in games, but it’s clear that he’s viewed as a bit part player under the German.
It’s been claimed since that the Blues would be willing to listen to offers exceeding £40m this summer for Abraham, provided suitors are in a position to match that valuation and the player himself would be willing to take the plunge.
Celtic fans think Odsonne Edouard has played his last game for the club ahead of an impending exit.
Edouard has been linked with a move to the Premier League with Aston Villa, Southampton, Leicester City, Crystal Palace and Arsenal all credited with an interest in the France Under-21 international.
Celtic’s failure to capture a tenth successive Scottish Premiership title, relinquishing their crown to an unbeaten Rangers, looks to have brought the curtain down on a fine career at Parkhead for Edouard.
Edouard has scored 83 times in 168 matches for Celtic and has registered 37 assists for John Kennedy’s side.
Twenty-two goals this season is still a fine return for Edouard, who has fired Celtic to three titles during his time at Parkhead.
Villa have been mentioned as a possible destination for Edouard, with Dean Smith ‘s side likely to dip into the striker market this summer.
And Edouard could be on their list with the Sunday Post, via the BBC, reporting in March that the player is likely to cost around £20m given he only has one year left on his transfer.
“It’s a shame that is probably Edouard’s last game for us,” one Celtic fan said. “What a player he has been.”
Another added: “French Eddy has today likely kicked his last ball in a Celtic shirt.”
“It’s the last time we see Edouard in a Celtic shirt,” a third supporter said.
“Edouard likely kicked his last ball for Celtic,” another adds while a fifth fan said: “We have seen Edouard in a Celtic shirt for the last time there. Good luck big man.”
