Sir Trevor McDonald to star as new GamesMaster in computer game show revival

GamesMaster is set to return to the small screen with Sir Trevor McDonald taking over the classic role as GamesMaster from the late Sir Patrick Moore

Sir Trevor McDonald is set to take over the reins and star as the next GamesMaster in the forthcoming revival series.

The presenter’s role was announced by E4 on Monday and sees the veteran broadcaster, 82, take over the classic role from the late Sir Patrick Moore.

The revival of the computer game programme in which celebrities, gamers and fans take part in challenges is set to be broadcast on E4 later in the year.

Sir Trevor said: “I am delighted to be taking on this iconic role for a new generation of viewers.”

The presenter is best known for his long career as a news presenter for ITV.

He was also the host of the channel’s popular flagship current affairs programme called Tonight with Trevor McDonald from 1999 to 2007.

GamesMaster first aired in 1992

Sir Trevor has also been the face of a number of hard-hitting documentaries over the years which have gripped the audience.

In his new role, the presenter will set up challenges and watch over competitors as they engage in virtual battles across different games in a bid to win the Golden Joystick Trophy.

The three-part series will be co-hosted by television presenter Robert Florence, Frankie Ward and Ty Logan and episodes are likely to be 60 minutes long.

Robert is a writer, actor and presenter who has written and starred in a range of BBC comedies, co-host, Frankie is an established face in esports, and it will be Ty’s first broadcast presenting credit in the year he was named as one of E4’s faces of the future.

Channel 4 said: “The series will see celebrities, gaming stars and super fans all take part in challenges, races and epic fights.

“Through virtual battles across a range of games, the competitors will try everything in their power to claim a legendary Golden Joystick Trophy. But whilst they play, they’ll be watched over by the all-knowing GamesMaster, famously portrayed in the original by Sir Patrick Moore.”

GamesMaster first aired between 1992 and 1998 and was hosted by Dominik Diamond.

It was one of the first shows of its kind which helped to bring video games to the small screen in a dedicated format. For many, it became a staple show when it was first released.

The series will premiere on E4’s YouTube channel before it’s then shown on E4.
