Piers Morgan shares Prince Philip’s scathing put down over BGT role

Piers Morgan has revealed that Prince Philip had a great habit of putting him down.

From his first meeting in 1998 at Prince Charles’ 50th birthday to the first Royal Variety Show performance by a Britain’s Got Talent winner, Piers admits that the Duke of Edinburgh “had a way with words”.

The former Good Morning Britain presenter, 56, was the latest to share stories about their experience with the late royal.

In the Mail on Sunday, Piers wrote how the word cordial only ever applied to a drink mixer for Prince Philip.

Discussing his Royal Variety Show appearance in 2007, Piers revealed the differing reactions from Philip and his wife, the Queen.

He wrote about how winner Paul Potts “nearly self-combusted with joy and pride” when the Queen told him: “You were very good.”

While Prince Philip wasn’t as polite, he mainly directed his snappiness towards BGT’s judges, Piers, Simon Cowell and Amanda Holden.

The Duke of Edinburgh asked the trio: ” You’re judges, is that right?” while he clenched Piers’ hand.

When Piers confirmed, the Prince scoffed: “So, you lot sponge off him then?”

But it wasn’t the first time Piers had encountered what he called the “legendarily waspish tongue” of the 99-year-old.

In the pair’s first meeting in 1998, Piers told how the prince “glared at me like I’d just strangled his wife’s corgis” when he found out he was press.

However, he completely understood Philip’s reaction, who also stomped off before turning back and growling: “My God, you just can’t tell from the outside, can you?”

Piers admits that he would have the same reaction towards anyone who revelled in and profited from the details of his family’s personal lives.

The prince was laid to rest in a ceremony on Saturday with tributes continuing to flood in from around the world.

Ruth Langsford told how her heart was breaking in a powerful social media post.

Kylie Minogue also took to Twitter to pay her respects. The singer posted an image of her meeting Prince Philip and wrote alongside it: “RIP HRH Prince Philip. What an honour it was to meet at Windsor Castle.”
