New Covid ‘epicentre’ emerges as cases soar nearly 10 times in week – full list

Worrying figures show the South West of England and parts of Wales have seen an explosion of Covid cases in a week – with some areas recording nearly 10 times as many cases.

Cheltenham, Stroud, Tewkesbury and Swindon have emerged as England’s worst hotspots, while Blaenau Gwent has the highest infection rate in the UK.

It comes as pressure mounts on the government to act following a rise in cases and deaths which has seen a large gap open between the UK and its nearest neighbours.

Latest Public Health England data shows 77 per cent of local authority areas have seen a week-on-week rise in new Covid cases.

The South West has emerged as England’s Covid epicentre, with Cheltenham recording 1,514 cases in seven days, up from 209.

Nearby Stroud saw new infections rise from 229 to 1,480 in a week, while Tewkesbury had 1,110, up from 117.

Blaenau Gwent in Wales continues to have the highest rate in the UK, with 919 new cases in the seven days to October 18 – the equivalent of 1,312.5 per 100,000 people.

This is up sharply from 371.3 in the seven days to October 11.

Cheltenham in Gloucestershire has the second highest rate, up from 180.1 to 1,304.7, with 1,514 new cases.

Stroud in Gloucestershire has the third highest rate, up from 189.4 to 1,224.1, with 1,480 new cases.

Armagh City, Banbridge & Craigavon has the highest rate in Northern Ireland (588.3) and Clackmannanshire has the highest rate in Scotland (495.2).

The five UK areas with the biggest week-on-week rises are:

  • Cheltenham (up from 180.1 to 1,304.7)
  • Stroud (189.4 to 1,224.1)
  • Tewkesbury (121.1 to 1,148.8)
  • Blaenau Gwent (371.3 to 1,312.5)
  • Swindon (280.9 to 1,088.0)

Today Professor Peter Openshaw, a member of the New and Emerging Respiratory Virus Threats Advisory Group (Nervtag), said case numbers and death rates are currently “unacceptable”.

He said measures such as working from home and mask wearing are “so important” as part of efforts to control the spread of Covid.

The expert’s warning comes after the Prime Minister resisted calls from health leaders for tighter restrictions despite the rising levels of infections.

Health Secretary Sajid Javid said this week that new cases could reach 100,000 a day but Downing Street insisted there was still spare capacity in the NHS and that Plan B would only be activated if it came under “significant pressure”.

Plan B includes working-from-home guidance and the mandatory use of face masks.

Speaking in a personal capacity, Prof Openshaw, of Imperial College London, told BBC Breakfast: “I’m very fearful that we’re going to have another lockdown Christmas if we don’t act soon.

“We know that with public health measures the time to act is immediately. There’s no point in delaying.

“If you do delay then you need to take even more stringent actions later. The immediacy of response is absolutely vital if you’re going to get things under control.

“We all really, really want a wonderful family Christmas where we can all get back together.

“If that’s what we want, we need to get these measures in place now in order to get transmission rates right down so that we can actually get together and see one another over Christmas.”
