Mick Hucknall’s mum has no regrets about walking out on star when he was just 3

The mum who walked out on Simply Red singer Mick Hucknall when he was just three years old has said she has no regrets about leaving him.

The star – whose hit Holding Back The Years was inspired by his desertion at the age of three – has previously spoken about its devastating effect on him.

Now the Mirror has tracked down Maureen Taylor to her home in Dallas, Texas. But, tragically, there was no outpouring of remorse for Mick.

Instead, the mum-of-five said: “I didn’t abandon him, absolutely not.

“My philosophy has always been the home is the most important thing, so I choose to do that because I wanted him to have a safe place.”

Asked if she loves him, the 80-year-old replied: “Of course I do. He’s my kid.”

But she has told friends she would “slap” Mick if she ever saw him again after he claimed she lied to him, telling him she had terminal cancer in the mid-90s in order to see him.

The pal said Maureen feels no remorse over her decision to leave Mick and his dad Reg in 1963, saying she believes it was the right thing to do.

“She doesn’t have any guilt,” the friend said. She felt she was leaving Michael in a place of safety because she had to work to keep a roof over her head. She couldn’t live with Reg. He wasn’t going to give her the house, so what was she supposed to do?

“Maureen says Reg didn’t pay her a penny. She calls him an ‘a***hole’. She says she never made a claim on the house despite it being in both their names.”

Maureen told her pal she had tried to take Mick and move back in with her mother, but her mum refused, leaving her to rent a room in a shared house unsuitable for raising a toddler.

She would, however, see him around the neighbourhood. The pal added: “She admits she ‘stalked’ him. When she was in England, Maureen would see him in supermarkets near where he lived and then would later tell him what he’d been wearing. You know, it wasn’t like she was dead to him. That’s not the case.”

Like her pop star son’s, Maureen’s love life has been colourful. She married Mick’s dad Reg in 1959 before divorcing him and marrying another man, with whom she had a son and daughter.

She later had two more children with a third husband before moving to the US in 1990, where she married and settled in Texas before divorcing again in 1994. Records show she then wed again in 2005, but that too ended in divorce after just seven months.

She then married a man 13 years her junior, and again divorced in 1998, before finding happiness in her latest marriage six years ago.

Pals say her anger towards Mick has not mellowed as she claims he has a different recollection of their meeting around 26 years ago at the Mansion on Turtle Creek hotel in Dallas.

Mick has told how he had flown to the States to see his mum after she claimed she had skin cancer. But she insists that is not what she said, and that she had only talked to him about looking after his skin because of his red hair and fair complexion.

The friend said: “Maureen has said she never wants to see him again.”

Twelve years ago Reg, a former RAF man and barber, died of a heart attack at his home in Manchester. Mick paid tribute to him on his 2015 album Big Love One, laying bare his feeling in the ballad Dad, which opens with the line: “She left, you stayed, it really wasn’t simple at all…She left, she’s gone.”

Similarly, Holding Back The Years, written by Mick at the age of 17, refers to his dad but also the actions of his mum.

Lyrics such as “Strangled by the wishes of pater [father], hoping for the arms of mater [mother]” and “Chance for me to escape from all I know” are said to refer to Maureen’s abandonment of him as a child.

Mick knows his mum was likely to have heard Big Love, in which he revisited the heartache of his childhood.

He said: “She should have thought of that before she abandoned us – and then went on to abandon another family, and two more kids, and ended up with four marriages.

“People who have had a mum and a dad find it hard to understand – there wasn’t even like a mum replacement figure because my dad never married again.

“As far as I’m concerned, I had my dad, and there isn’t another side. She can live her life, and I won’t harbour a grudge.”

Mick, who once claimed to have slept with over 3,000 women in three years – reportedly including Helena Christensen, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Melanie Sykes and Steffi Graff – blames his mother’s absence for past sex addiction.

He once said: “That framed my relationship with women.”

He added: “I wanted the love from every single woman on the planet because I didn’t have my mother’s love.

“It was an addiction that took me to my darker period from 1996 to 2001 when I really came close to the gutter.

“I was more into drinking than seducing. I had got bored with it all as I never really got the emotional contact that I craved.”

Now Mick is living happily with wife Gabriella Wesberry and their daughter Romy, 14, in Hersham, Surrey. He has amassed a fortune reported to be worth around £44million after selling more than 60 million albums.

But Maureen takes no responsibility for his past troubles.

Her friend added: “She says Michael likes to blame people. She puts it down to his star sign. He’s a Gemini.

“She has said he tries to blame everybody else for his bad behaviour but that he can’t accept the fact she gave him the gift of life.

“Maureen thinks there are other kids that go through hell, worse hell than Michael.

“She once told me he had a good home, a comfortable home, and she left him with that.

“As for being a sex addict, she said that’s his deal. She said that’s who he is and not to blame anybody else.”
