Thierry Henry announced Dennis Bergkamp is the best player he ever shared a pitch with while providing Champions League coverage for CBS Sports on Tuesday.

The programme’s presenter Kate Abdo put the Arsenal legend on the spot asking: “Who is the best player you played alongside?”

To which Henry responded without hesitation: “Dennis Bergkamp.” Abdo questioned the Frenchman’s pick, asking: “Not [Lionel] Messi?”

But Belgium assistant coach Henry stood by his original response: “Dennis Bergkamp. Is it quickfire? Dennis Bergkamp.”

Henry won two Premier League titles and three FA Cups alongside Bergkamp, who is regarded as one of Arsenal’s greatest ever players.

The Frenchman has previously revealed how highly he rates Bergkamp.

In an interview with The Independent, Henry said: “I have always said Dennis Bergkamp will remain the best partner I have ever had. He is a dream for a striker.”

He also said of him in Facebook Q&A in 2015: “Because of longevity, and because I saw him every day in training for seven years, Dennis Bergkamp.

“Because he was always doing what the game was asking him to do.”

“I admired how Dennis was always trying to respect the game. He could score, but he could also pass and wait for the right moment. … He was always trying to respect the game when he could do other stuff.”

But Henry also played alongside one Lionel Messi at Barcelona, winning two La Liga titles and the illustrious Champions League with him.

And, interestingly, a comment from Messi, recalling the Frenchman signing for Barcelona from Arsenal, suggests he rates Henry as highly as he does Bergkamp.

Back in 2007, Messi was 20 and still making a name for himself at the Camp Nou.

Henry suddenly arrived on the scene and Messi was so starstruck he was unable to look the World Cup winner in the eyes.

“The first day he entered the dressing room, I did not dare to look him in the face,” Messi told L’Equipe. “I knew everything he had done in England. I had an image of him made and suddenly we were on the same team.

“What I feel for Titi may be a form of admiration. I loved Henry. The ease of finishing an action, how he takes the road to the goal and ends the play.

“He gives the impression that it is natural. His career, his dribbling, the last gesture. It is fluid, proportionate.”
