Liverpool‘s bid to replenish their ageing attack is seeing them linked with a host of exciting players, including Leeds star Raphinha.

The 24-year-old has starred for Brazil over the international break and his agent, former Chelsea and Barcelona playmaker Deco, has confirmed that the Reds enquired about the winger during the summer transfer window.

Although Raphinha ultimately stayed put at Elland Road, he harbours ambitions “to play at a higher level,” having joined Leeds last year from Rennes for £17 million, going on to rack up six goals and nine assists in 30 top-flight appearances.

“Raphinha became an important player in the Premier League, the club knows he has grown and things will happen naturally,” Deco said, via Globo Esporte.

“He is young, he has many challenges ahead, there are certainly several clubs that like him, and Liverpool do like him, there were approaches, but nothing official.

“Leeds wanted to keep him for another season,” the Portuguese confirmed.

“Raphinha has a market, and Leeds have high expectations, it was never a project in a hurry.

“He has ambitions to play at a higher level despite Leeds being in the Premier League.

“But this is not the time and his focus, things will happen naturally,” Deco stated.

“He has a three-year contract, but it’s not the contract that defines the length of stay or prevents a transfer.

“Leeds are aware, they’ll want to make an important sale, and Raphinha will end up growing in his career.”

With Jurgen Klopp ‘s famed forward line all turning 30 by the start of next season, his club are preparing for a new era in attack.

The interest could also come from the Anfield dressing room, with Brazil team-mates Alisson, Roberto Firmino and Fabinho all experiencing Raphinha’s qualities up close after he won first two caps for the national team for last week.

And the latter Liverpool man wants him to join the Merseyside club, recently revealing, as quoted by Brazilian outlet UOL : “Since he [Raphinha] arrived in the Premier League he has had very good performances and highlights.

“For Liverpool, I was hoping that would happen. But in the end, he stayed with Leeds,” Fabinho explained.

“He’s Leeds’ best player today. Whenever we play against them, we know he’s the player who can cause the most danger.”

Like the Reds trio, the ex-Sporting Lisbon wide man is set to swiftly travel back to England from international duty following Brazil’s World Cup qualifier against Uruguay in Manaus in the early hours of Friday morning.

But Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa has confirmed he will not risk Raphinha if he is tired come kick-off at 3pm the next day, when the Yorkshire outfit travel to face Southampton at St Mary’s.

“There’s no doubt that it’s a short turnaround,” Bielsa admitted.

“The options he has to participate in the game on Saturday depend on whether he plays the full game, how many minutes he plays, how he finishes the game and then if he does play, how good the rest is that he has in the next 36 hours, and a third of those hours he will spend flying.”

The Peacocks’ boss added: “If there’s a risk that fatigue causes injury, then we won’t risk it.”

“There are so many aspects to consider that I can’t offer any more certainty.”
