Kim Kardashian married Kris Humphries 10 years ago this week, before they decided to end their romance after just 72 days as husband and wife. To mark the milestone, we look back at Kim and Kris’ OTT wedding and how it differed to her sophisticated nuptials when she married Kanye West in 2014
Kim Kardashian married Kris Humphries 10 years ago this week – and their marriage famously lasted just 72 days before they decided it wasn’t working.
The Keeping Up With The Kardashians star admitted she felt “pressure” to marry Kris as their wedding was being filmed for the family’s E! reality show.
“I felt pressure, I thought I was going to let everyone down,” she said recently.
“I was so nervous to break up with someone. I totally handled it the wrong way. I fully broke up with him in the worst way, and I just didn’t know to deal.”
But with the wedding costing a whopping $10 million, and it being filmed for a television special, it was dramatically different from Kim’s wedding to Kanye West, who she tied the knot with in May 2014.
Here we take a look at all the differences between Kim’s two weddings.
For her wedding to basketball player Kris, Kim opted for the stunning Sotto Il Monte estate in Montecito, California.
It was sealed off days before the wedding to keep things as secret as possible but aerial shots at the time showed contractors building a stage in the grounds of the luxury villa.
But when Kim married Kanye in 2014, she made sure it was an international affair.
The couple first flew their guests to Paris, France for the pre-wedding party and then they all headed over to Florence, Italy – a cool 500 plus miles away.
Guests then saw Kim and Kanye tie the knot in an intimate ceremony in a 16th century fortress in Florence, choosing the city for their wedding because that’s where their daughter North was conceived.
The wonderful outfits
Kim opted for multiple gowns for her big day with Kris.
She wore a stunning Vera Wang wedding dress, complete with a diamond headpiece for the actual wedding and later changed into another frock.
Her second dress was also by Vera Wang and was a luxurious silver silk curve-hugging dress.
When she wed Kanye, Kim was so in love with her Givenchy gown, designed by pal Riccardo Tisci, that she just wore the one dress that day.
However, Kim did wear three different outfits the day before – opting for different looks for her pre-wedding lunch, rehearsal dinner, bachelorette party.
The guest list
Both weddings were celeb-filled affairs, with the likes of Ciara and Lindsay Lohan attending Kim’s wedding to Kris. All guests had to abide to a strict black or white dress code.
Sisters Kendall and Kylie Jenner and Kourtney and Khloe Kardashian all wore ivory Vera Wang gowns, looking like the bride herself. Kris Jenner also wore white whilst Mason, Kourtney’s son, – who was the ring bearer – also kept with the family’s colour scheme.
Of dress code, Kim said at the time: “I get really uncomfortable when it’s all about me, so I kind of want to share that experience with everyone so that there aren’t like, all eyes on me.”
When she married Kanye, the happy couple were joined by the likes of John Legend, his wife Chrissy Teigen, as well as Jaden Smith, Tyga, Steve McQueen and Kim’s best friend Jonathan Cheban. All her sisters were at the event of the year – but Kim’s brother Rob Kardashian sat out of the Italian celebrations.
Kim pulled out all the stops at her wedding to Kanye, with guests treated to performances by John Legend – who performed as the couple’s wedding singer – and Lana Del Rey performed for guests at the pre-wedding party.
Andrea Bocelli sang as Kim walked down the aisle – but she nearly missed his performance!
“We flew in from Paris and our glam was rushed as we were trying to make it on time!” she recalled a couple of years ago.
“We barely got my veil in as I was being pushed out the door so fast to walk down the aisle because Andrea Bocelli had started singing and I couldn’t miss it. I had no idea it was really him until I got to the isle and screamed inside! So many amazing memories.”
At her wedding to Kris, Robin Thicke performed a mash up of Angels and Let’s Stay Together.
Magazine deals and television specials
For her wedding to Kris, Kim decided to film the whole event for the family’s reality show, Keeping Up With The Kardashians whilst People magazine paid big money to have exclusive rights to what was happening behind closed doors.
When she married Kanye, they decided not to film the wedding, telling fans at the time: “As much as we would love to share these memories, privacy is our main priority.”
Guests were also asked to sign a non-disclosure agreement to not take or publish any photos at the event, and phones were banned.
The amazing cakes
It was all about going over the top for Kim’s wedding to Kris and their cake was very much in that theme.
It was designed by Patrick Hansen of Hansen’s Cake and cost the couple a whopping $20,000.
The cake was eight feet tall and weighed nearly 600 pounds, being transported in unmarked vans in three different parts to be assembled at the venue.
They even needed stepladders to put the cake together – but sadly, most of it wasn’t even eaten as guests were served pre-prepared chocolate-chip marble cake with buttercream frosting.
At her 2014 wedding to rapper Kanye, Kim’s cake was equally lavish.
It was a seven tier luxurious bake, which mixed white cake with fruit layers, and was hand crafted by Galateo Ricevimenti.
