Jamie Dornan has said that he was stuck in quarantine on the other side of the world when his dad died from Covid in Northern Ireland.

The 39-year-old actor, who is probably best known for starring in Fifty Shades of Grey, was in hotel isolation in Australia ahead of filming BBC drama The Tourist.

It was while he was there that he received the news that his dad was dying after he went to hospital for a routine knee operation but contracted Covid while there and eventually passed away from the deadly virus.

Jamie, who starred alongside Gillian Anderson in thriller The Fall, has spoken about the trauma he felt at that moment, which is an experience that has been repeated countless times across the globe for thousands of people.

Speaking about it, Jamie said: “It’s been a brutal time for lots of reasons and for lots of people. We’re all just trying to ride it out and come out the other side — and hope we’ve got our heads intact.”

Jamie’s father Jim was an obstetrician and gynaecologist in Northern Ireland and was proud that his son was going to star in Sir Kenneth Branagh’s Belfast, about a dad in the midst of the country’s troubles.

“I remember thinking it was a big thing in our house that he’d been around and done that and met Dad and stuff.”

The actor said that 2021 was “the worst year . . . and the hardest” of his life, after the passing of his father.

Jamie said: “I’ve been subjected, early on in my life and now, to a lot of pain and loss.”
