GMB’s Kate Garraway hopes for ‘wonderful’ appearance from husband Derek at NTAs

Good Morning Britain presenter Kate Garraway has revealed that she hopes her husband Derek Draper will be well enough to attend the National Television Awards ceremony after her documentary Finding Derek received a nomination

Kate Garraway says she may try to take husband Derek to the NTAs

Kate Garraway has said it would be “wonderful” if her husband Derek Draper could attend the National Television Awards.

The Good Morning Britain presenter was congratulated on Tuesday’s show by co-presenter Charlotte Hawkins for her documentary Finding Derek was nominated for Authored Documentary at the awards with the ceremony due to be held in September.

Kate Garraway: Finding Derek followed the presenter as she and her family coped with the aftermath of Derek falling critically ill with Covid-19 in March 2020 and his subsequent long road to recovery.

Derek was released from the hospital earlier this year and has been recovering at home since.

Following comments on the Covid-19 pandemic with Dr Hillary Jones, Charlotte said to Kate: “Picking up on Covid and the consequences of it, something that we must mention, because you obviously have firsthand experience of dealing with the aftermath of coronavirus and what that can mean for someone, with Derek and the family.

“Congratulations to you because your authored documentary Kate Garraway: Finding Derek has been shortlisted for a National Television Award and very well-deserved.”

In response, Kate commented: “I didn’t know until I saw it in the papers this morning, it’s wonderful for the production company and for Derek, it’s wonderful.”

Kate then revealed that she had some hopes for her husband Derek to make a public appearance at the ceremony.

She said: “I was just thinking, I was just looking the ceremony is the 9th September it says there. I think it is. Wouldn’t it be wonderful, if Derek is well enough to come? Wouldn’t it be wonderful?”

“I was trying to work out the dates and see the logistics of how that might work. There’s some brilliant people int he category and I don’t think for a moment we’d win. It would just be lovely for him to be there.

“I’ll start planning how that might work.”

Guests commentators Kevin Maguire, Associate Editor of the Daily Mirror, and Daily Mail columnist Amanda Platel both agreed that such an appearance would indeed be “wonderful” and “beautiful”.

Amanda added: “We’ll say our prayers for you.”

Kate noted: “We’ll say our prayers.”

Those present also briefly discussed former GMB star Piers Morgan receiving a nomination for his work on the show, with Dr Hillary joking it would be “ironic” if he won after leaving.

The National Television Awards 2021 will be held on September 9.
