Ed Sheeran is set to release his new album next month while his single Bad Habits has spent over two months at number one, but he almost quit the industry
Ed Sheeran has spent over two months at number one with his single Bad Habits, but fans almost missed out on the gem as the flame-haired musician considered retirement.
The singer had an 18-month hiatus from music before returning with his latest banger, but things could have been all so different as he toyed with quitting the industry following the birth of his daughter.
Wife Cherry gave birth to the 30-year-old’s daughter last August and her arrival made Ed think towards his future.
In the end, he reasoned with himself internally and made a decision to carry on, thinking it was best for both him and his family to do so.
Speaking to GQ magazine, the musician said: “I actually convinced myself I was never going to sing or pick up the guitar again. I was like, ‘No. This is it. I quit’.
“I asked, what’s more important for my daughter and my family? Is it being there 110 per cent of the time and not going to London for a day […] Or is it having a daughter that knows her mum and dad have a great work ethic and really love their jobs?”
Ed admitted that he had to call himself unemployed during his time away from his music, and this is something which greatly upset the star.
“‘I saw myself as technically being unemployed during that period of noncreation,” he continued. “And, to be honest, I was f**king miserable. I wanted Cherry to see me happy and thriving.’
He went on to discuss his true friendships in the industry, name dropping Stormzy and Taylor Swift.
He said that if he hadn’t had collaborated with the Shut Up singer, they’d still be pals while he said Taylor is someone he call “if things were truly f***ed”.
On Wednesday night, Ed dazzled at the GQ Men of the Year awards in a very colourful Versace blazer.
The star later thanked Elton John for the fashion advice and said the loudness of the outfit helped him to “feel good”.

Ed told The Sun: “I actually feel pretty good in it and it’s a while since there were big events on, so here I am. I’d feel less comfortable in an ordinary suit. It’s easier being in this.”
“Before I came tonight I FaceTimed Elton to show him the results. He’s been slagging off my boring wardrobe for years. I’m not really a fashion guy but I’ve had to start to show an interest – he loves it. Elton approved — it’s very him.”
