The American actress is a close friend of Alec after they starred together on comedy series Will & Grace. Alec has been involved in a fatal shooting incident on the set of his current film project.
Debra Messing has defended Alec Baldwin as Hollywood reacts to the star’s involvement in the accidental shooting on set of a film which left one crew member dead and the film director injured.
On Thursday, Alec shot a prop gun while on the set of western film Rust – with cinematographer Halyna Hutchins dying in the incident and director Joel Souza requiring hospital treatment after being wounded.
The incident has rocked Hollywood – while a police investigation into the incident is reported to be “ongoing” following the fatal shooting.
Debra hit out at Benny Johnson – who hosts US podcast The Benny Show – after he tweeted: “BREAKING: Alec Baldwin kills person with gun, criminal investigation underway. This is the accurate headline fyi.”
Coming to the defence of her former co-star, Debra replied: “It is absolutely NOT. A prop gun was handed to him . He used it in the scene.
“Then- a catastrophic event happened where Halnya Hutchins lost her life and Joel Souza was injured.”
She added: “I am praying for all of their families.”

She also retweeted well-wishes from Phil Nobile Jr., the editor of Fangoria, that read: “My thoughts are with Halyna Hutchins’ friends and family, and I’m hoping that Joel Souza and Alec Baldwin are with the ones they love and receiving the best care possible. What a horrible situation.”
Alec himself released a statement on Friday.
He wrote: “There are no words to convey my shock and sadness regarding the tragic accident that took the life of Halyna Hutchins, a wife, mother and deeply admired colleague of ours.
“I’m fully cooperating with the police investigation to address how this tragedy occurred and I am in touch with her husband, offering my support to him and his family. My heart is broken for her husband, their son, and all who knew and loved Halyna.”
While Halyna’s devastated family are reported to be demanding answers as to how the accident happened.
A friend in Kiev, Ukraine, where Halyna grew up, told The Sun : “The family is grieving but at the same time they are asking and they will want answers. If someone made a mistake then they will have to pay.
“They just don’t understand how something dreadful like this could have happened when safety measures are supposed to be in place.

“They are also frantically trying to secure documents to get to the United States. Her mother does not have the correct paperwork.”
Other reports have stated that Alec is “being supportive” to Halyna’s grieving husband.
Meanwhile, production on the movie – which was being filmed at the Bonanza Creek Ranch, a 2,000-acre ranch in New Mexico – has been paused following the tragic incident.
