Countdown’s Nick Hewer says replacement Anne Robinson will be ‘different’

Nick Hewer has teased that new Countdown host Anne Robinson will be a completely “different character” to himself.

Nick is stepping down from the hit Channel 4 quiz show after a decade at the helm, with an all-female cast in charge for the first time in its history.

And although retiring Nick, 77, hasn’t met fellow present Anne yet, he hopes she’ll be a big success in the iconic role.

“I haven’t met her, but I hope I will one day,” admitted Nick, in an interview on Good Morning Britain.

The former Apprentice star Nick added with a wry smile: “I remember her of course from the Weakest Link. But she’s fine, that was all an act.”

Anne is fondly remembered – and revered in equal measure by contestants and viewers – for her hard-nosed persona on WL.

But Nick stressed: “On Countdown she’ll be completely different. I think she’ll be terrific.”

FormerBBC presenter Anne established herself as a respected presenter on Points of View and Watchdog.

But it was on the Weakest Link where she really shot to fame for the show’s no-nonsense host.

And GMB surprised Nick with a special recorded video message from Anne, who was sat in Nick’s trademark chair on the show.

“Hello Nick I’m sitting in your chair, but they’ve had to put a platform behind me because I’m much shorter and dumpier than you are,” joked Anne.

Pointing up at the famous Countdown clock, Anne continued: “I know you were looking at that clock for ten years and eating hundreds of Ripple chocolate bars.

“I don’t eat those, I have calorie free food in the fridge.”

She added: “Have a wonderful retirement.”

And then teased: “I don’t know how long I’ll go on but, as you know, women do last longer than men.”

Nick took over Countdown presenting duties from Jeff Stelling in January 2012, with his last show this Friday, 25 June.

And from Monday, Anne, 76, will be taking over hosting duties and working alongside brain boxes Rachel Riley and Susie Dent.

Colin Murray hosted the show as a stand-in for year, but now Anne is looking to add her unique stamp on proceedings.
