The pair engaged in a heated war of words when McGregor mocked a video of Poirier describing a brutal street fight where he was attacked by a large group of men after defending his wife
Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier resumed their social media back-and-forth following the unearthing of a video about Poirier’s involvement in a street brawl.
A fan sent McGregor a clip from a podcast with comedian The Von where Poirier described being assaulted during a fight that started when a man touched his wife without her consent, and the Irishman replied “sounds about right”.
Poirier said in the video that he was at his brother’s house for a street party when the attack took place.
“You know, everybody is out on the street,” he explained. And my wife was leaning over a fence talking to somebody.
“Guys from next door came over and like, bent over her back – while she was bending over – and put his hand on her stomach, started talking in her ear. Bro.
“I ripped him off, I had a buddy of mine who fights – he started dropping this other guy’s people left and right. Every shot that landed, everybody fell.
“He shot a hundred percent from the field that night.
“Then I started punching this guy and then he had a lot more friends than we did – people were fighting everywhere.
“I ended up getting my back up against a car because they were jumping and I got hit with a bunch of uppercuts.
“It was crazy, man.”
After McGregor’s comment, Poirier responded with the infamous ‘sleepy McGregor’ meme of the Irishman after being knocked out in their rematch earlier this year.
The reply incensed the former two-weight world champion, who responded with a barrage of insults in a tweet which remains up to this day, deviating from his usual ‘tweet-and-delete’ style.
“Yeah pal live on that one way back, I will too,” McGregor said. “I bounced your head off the canvas like a basketball.
“Your wife bro. The dm’s.
“Elbows into your dome. The soft part of the skull that doesn’t harden ever. From when you’re a baby. Drilled into your skull at 100mph. You slept on my belly.”
And when Poirier responded with McGregor’s record since becoming lightweight champion, 3-1, McGregor hit back with a jab presumably about his finances, saying “Three commas kid.”
The Louisiana native sarcastically responded to him with “congratulations” before McGregor got the last word saying “Slainte”.
Poirier also appeared to see the funny side of the exchange, retweeting a comment from a fan that said “at least you guys can relate on getting choked out by Khabib.”
McGregor and Poirier first fought in 2014 when the Irishman won by way of a brutal TKO within minutes of the fight, before rematching at the start of this year.
Poirier won the second bout after utilising hard-hitting leg kicks to slow McGregor down before unleashing a devastating right hand to hand McGregor his first KO loss in his MMA career.
They had a trilogy bout in July which Poirier also won after one round, although the finish was controversial as McGregor snapped his own leg stepping back from a teep kick which caused an instant doctor’s stoppage in the corner.
