Human remains found in Florida park amid search for Brian Laundrie

Brian Laundrie was eaten by alligators and wild pigs in the Florida park where his body was found, locals have claimed.

The remains of Laundrie, 23, were found on Wednesday during the FBI search after his parents joined authorities in looking for him.

Laundrie disappeared early last month after returning from a road trip without his partner Gabby Petito, 22, and refusing to cooperate with an investigation into her disappearance.

Yesterday, the FBI confirmed the remained belonged to Laundrie by doing a dental record comparison as all that was left of the body was “bones.”

They also confirmed Laundrie’s body was found in an area previously covered by water.

John Widmann, who lives about a mile from the 25,000-acre Carlton Reserve, told the New York Post : “I walk there all the time and there won’t be much of the remains left.

“There’s alligators, but the worst thing is the wild pigs. They’re evil animals and will eat anything. Any flesh out in the open will not be wasted.”

“There won’t be much for the coroner to work on. Nature doesn’t waste anything.”

Gabby’s body was discovered in a remote area in Wyoming on September 19, and a post-mortem confirmed she had been strangled.

The FBI launched a manhunt for Laundrie and named him as a person of interest in Gabby’s death.

Gabby was last seen on August 27, when she apologised to restaurant staff after Laundrie argued with them.

Laundrie then briefly returned to his parents’ home in Florida on September 1 before he vanished, supposedly telling his parents he was going hiking.

Human remains were found alongside a backpack and notepad belonging to Laundrie at the Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park on Wednesday.

Laundrie family attorney Steve Bertolino said in a statement to Fox News : “Chris and Roberta Laundrie have been informed that the remains found yesterday in the reserve are indeed Brian’s.

“We have no further comment at this time and we ask you to respect the Laundrie family’s privacy at this time.”

Gabby and Laundrie embarked on their trip in early July from New York’s Long Island, where her parents live.

As they travelled through Kansas, Colorado, Utah and points west, Gabby documented their “van life” on social media.

She posted her final photo to Instagram on August 25, the same day she last spoke to her mum by phone.

They were seen quarrelling in August, with police in Utah releasing a video showing Gabby tearfully describing a dispute she had had with Laundrie.

He was later named a person of interest in her disappearance, and on September 23 a federal grand jury in Wyoming indicted him on a charge of fraudulently using Gabby’s bank debit card.

It was alleged he spent $1,000 or more between August 30 and September 1.

He had not been charged in relation to Gabby’s death.

Earlier this week Gabby’s mum said she had concerns for her daughter, but thought Laundrie would “take care” of her.

Nicole Schmidt told 60 Minutes Australia : “I felt safe because she was with Brian, and I felt like she would be okay … I thought that he would take care of her.”

She said she suspected Laundrie’s parents may know what happened to Gabby, saying: “Silence speaks volumes.”

She added: “I believe they know probably, if not everything, they know most of the information. I would love to face-to-face ask, ‘Why are you doing this?'”

She also said in the interview she supported her daughter’s choice to travel with Laundrie, and described him as ‘polite and quiet’.

Gabby’s stepdad, Jim Schmidt, said Laundrie was “hiding” from the authorities and told the interview he and his wife “want vengeance … and justice”.
