At least one person has died and 13 others were injured in a mass shooting in and around a supermarket in Tennessee, US, with petrified employees hiding in freezers.

The shooter took his own life following the rampage at the Kroger store in Collierville, Memphis, on Thursday.

Police Chief Dale Lane, speaking at the scene in Byhalia and Poplar Avenue, said the department received reports of an active shooter at 1.30pm local time, with officers arriving four minutes later.

Officers quickly began clearing the Kroger, aisle to aisle and room to room.

With the suspect dead, investigators searched his car and personal equipment.

“This is the most horrific event to happen in Collierville history,” the chief said.

“It’s with a broken heart that I have to stand before you today,” he continued. “Please keep the families in your prayers.”

More than a dozen people were injured, with at least fatality

“We found people hiding in freezers and in locked offices,” Lane said.

“They were doing what they had been trained to do. Run, hide, fight. I hate that we had to do it here.”

He did not confirm the type of weapon used.

Four patients are understood to be in critical condition, according to reports.

Law enforcement officials said the victims were suffering from “very serious injuries”, with further updates on their conditions not currently available.

Medical helicopters were used to take the patients to hospital.

Reporters at the scene say at least 12 ambulances, with one witness claiming as many as 30 people were shot.

Multiple shoppers fled the store and staff took shelter inside after at least a dozen gunshots sounded, according to witnesses.

Armed officers later escorted employees as they ran to safety, with one worker who escaped to the roof rescued, the force confirmed.

Schools in the area, including Collierville High School, were temporarily placed on lockdown.

In a statement on Facebook, the force said: “The Collierville Police Department is working an incident at Kroger, 240 New Byhalia Road in Collierville. The scene is secure and this is an active investigation.

“Chief Lane met with members of the media a short time ago and information regarding this incident will be released via the local media outlets. As we obtain more through the investigation, we will post information as we can.

“Please avoid the area as we continue to work the incident,” it added.

Supermarket employee Glenda McDonald, who works in the floral department, said was left shaken by the incident but not injured.

“I just ran out the door,” Ms McDonald said, referring to when she heard a gunshot. “I left my purse, my keys, everything.”

Manny Reis was driving past the scene when he saw patrol cars arriving.

The 49-year-old told Memphis Commercial Appeal : “Tons and tons of cop cars flying towards the back entrance of the Kroger on the street that runs behind it and they blocked it all off, and then they’re all opening up their trunks and grabbing shotguns.

“And then they all started swarming around.”

He added that he watched four paramedics carrying away one of the victims.

Patients were taken to a Regional One Health hospital and at least one to a Baptist Memorial Health Care facility.
