I’m A Celebrity: Ant & Dec star as knights in ITV promo

I’m A Celebrity has been slammed by animal welfare charity PETA after Ant McPartlin was seen in a behind-the-scenes clip filming the advert for the new series while sat on a small Shetland pony.

In official trailer for the new series, which was released on Friday, Ant is seen dressed as a knight and sat on the pony while his co-host Declan Donnelly is perched on a much bigger white horse in similar atire.

In the behind-the-scenes clip which was shared on Ant and Dec’s Instagram page, Ant, 45, is seen sat on the pony as it walks in circles and forwards and backwards.

Ant joked: “Haha it’s doing a little dance for you,” before singing lyrics to KC & The Sunshine Band’s Get Down Tonight – “Do a little dance, make a little love, get down tonight,” as people chuckle in the background.

He was also seen feeding the pony a treat and saying: “This is what you get for being a good boy.”

PETA slammed the decision to use the horse for “cheap laughs” and said the stunt caused the pony struggle and risk injury.

The charity’s director Elisa Allen told MailOnline: “Is there anything I’m A Celebrity wouldn’t do in a desperate attempt to get cheap laughs at the expense of animals ’ welfare?

“This stunt caused a Shetland pony to struggle and risk acute back pain and even lameness.

“PETA urges the show’s producers to find more creative and humane ways of introducing its absurd antics and to leave animals in peace.”

Fans of the due also took to Instagram to tell of their “disappointment” over the use of the small pony in the advert and claimed Ant was “too heavy” to be sitting on its back.

One person wrote: “Bloody hell Ant you are wey (sic) too big for that little horse get off.”

Another said: “How was this actually allowed …beyond belief that poor little pony it’s wicked.”

A third raged: “That’s not cool guys. The reason that pony is dancing around like that is because of the weight on his back.

“That pony should only carry the weight of a small child on his back, not a full grown man in armour. The horse is clearly not happy which doesn’t make it very funny.”

A fourth added: “Love your work, always have, but shame on you both for using that small pony to carry Ant who is clearly far to heavy for it.

ITV told The Mirror, the pony used is “professionally trained to work in the film and television industry”.

A spokesperson for the broadcaster said in a statement: “Throughout the shoot the horse master and a team of expert handlers were on location at all times. The safety and wellbeing of the horses and pony used for filming were of utmost priority to everyone.”

PETA has been contacted by The Mirror for comment.
