Angelina Jolie ‘ashamed’ to be American following withdrawal from Afghanistan

Angelina Jolie confessed she is ashamed to be American after their withdrawal from Afghanistan.

The actress and activist condemned the United States for its “ betrayal and a failure” amid the country’s turbulence as the militant group Taliban regained control.

Writing for Time, the 46-year-old worried for the people of Afghanistan after America “lacked the will” to slowly withdrawal their forces from the country.

“Giving up the idea of a peace agreement between the Afghan government and the Taliban, appearing to cut and run, and abandoning our allies and supporters in the most chaotic way imaginable, after so many years of effort and sacrifice, is a betrayal and a failure impossible to fully understand,” she wrote.

“…After all the bloodshed and effort and sacrifice and time, America seems to have lacked the will to plan this transition in a managed way. It was never going to be easy or perfect but could have been better, more decent and safer.”

The Taliban’s rapid advance across the country comes after foreign forces announced their withdrawal following a deal between the group and the US.

It’s been 20 years since US forces removed the Taliban from power in 2001.

Angelina continued in her op-ed: “As an American, I am ashamed by the manner of our leaving. It diminishes us. We have lost leverage to influence what now happens in Afghanistan.

She went on to say that the US “lacked a strategy to monitor and support women and civil society in Afghanistan, who the Taliban have a history of targeting”.

The Eternals star also previously shared a heartwrenching letter written by an Afghan girl.

In the letter, the young girl opens up about how terrified they are of what may happen to them now the Taliban has taken control of the country.

Angelina – who only recently joined Instagram – wrote on social media: “This is a letter I was sent from a teenage girl in Afghanistan. Right now, the people of Afghanistan are losing their ability to communicate on social media and to express themselves freely.

“So I’ve come on Instagram to share their stories and the voices of those across the globe who are fighting for their basic human rights.”

“It is sickening to watch Afghans being displaced yet again out of the fear and uncertainty that has gripped their country.

“To spend so much time and money, to have bloodshed and lives lost only to come to this, is a failure almost impossible to understand.”

She went on to say she will keep on searching for ways she could help the country and asked her followers to do the same.
