Have I been scammed by a woman I met online and sent over £2,000 to?

DEAR DEIDRE: A WOMAN I met on a dating site persuaded me to give her thousands of pounds.

I am a 58-year-old divorced man. At the time, I was feeling lonely.

Have I been scammed by a woman I met online and sent over £2,000 to?

She told me she was 33 and lived in Thailand. She said she had lost her job in a hotel due to the pandemic.

We’d been chatting for months and I agreed to send her money to help her out.

At first it was just £100 but when I totted up her regular requests, I was surprised to realise I’d sent her £2,600.

My friends told me she was using me, and that it was a scam. They said women like her have several boyfriends who all send them money.

They carefully coordinate visits with them to Thailand.

If two want to visit her at the same time, she will make herself available to the one who gives her the most money.

She will tell the other one she is in the village with family and try to reschedule their visit.

Apparently the money earned normally goes straight to their husbands.

After I asked her if she’d heard of this sort of scam, she cut off all contact.

DEIDRE SAYS: I’m sorry but this is obviously a scam.

They are all too common. Don’t be too hard on yourself – these people can be very convincing.

As a rule, never send money to anyone you meet online.
