Steven Gerrard details piece of Klopp advice that he now understands

Steven Gerrard admits he is finally able to get his head around the piece of advice Jurgen Klopp gave him before taking the Rangers job.

The former Liverpool captain guided the Ibrox side to a stunning title win over Celtic this season with his side on the verge of going unbeaten and smashing the 100 point barrier in the process.

Gerrard ‘s success at such an early stage in his managing career has meant he’s been continually linked with the Liverpool job and tipped to be Klopp’s successor.

The pair have a good relationship from when Gerrard worked as a Reds youth coach before he took the position at Rangers three years ago.

Klopp had some words of wisdom for him at the time as he told Gerrard to ‘try and be as balanced as you can’.

And now the Rangers head coach knows exactly what he meant.

Steven Gerrard led Rangers to the Scottish Premiership title this season

He told Sky Sports: “I can’t believe it’s three years already.

“I’ve loved the job and the role. It’s an absolute pleasure and honour to do it. It’s been a journey, some incredible and lows as well – as I always knew it would be.

“This journey takes you all over the place. It takes you to some top feelings, incredible feelings, but it’s also taken me down as well.

“I remember having a conversation with Jurgen Klopp before I even took this role about management and stuff and asking him some of the key things he could tell me that I could take from him moving forward.

“He always said to me ‘try and be as balanced as you can’ and now I know exactly why he said that.”

Rangers will attempt to reach the Champions League group stage for the first time in a decade and Gerrard hopes the club will back him in the transfer market to help achieve that feat and defend their title.

He added: “I want to come back in pre-season with a fair chance of being successful. That’s all I ask for and hopefully, the board will support me in that and we go again

“I’m still as hungry and ambitious as I was when I walked in on the first day. I’m as ambitious as anyone connected to this club.

“I want to try and get this club Champions League football and defend this title with our life and put the cup thing right because it doesn’t sit well with me.”
