Man Utd face Liverpool on Sunday currently sixth and on a three-game winless run in the Premier League, while Jurgen Klopp’s men are unbeaten and second
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has told his Manchester United players they must beat Liverpool this weekend if they are serious about pushing for the title.
United already trail Jurgen Klopp’s side by four points and Solskjaer fears if United lose on Sunday, a seven-point gap, might be too much to make up.
“Every time you play for Manchester United, you play for three points,” said Solskjaer.
“To be seven behind is going to be a big distance. It’s so early in the season, but every game matters just as much.
“We saw last season every team goes through a bad spell, and we’re chasing them, Liverpool are one of the teams we’re trying to catch up on.

“Even though last season we were ahead of them, maybe because of bad luck with injuries, we know we still have to improve to get up to the level of their last four years.
“When you play against a team at the level of Liverpool who are on a great run of form, they have some individual skills that you cannot almost defend against.
“But, as a team, we have to be compact, aggressive and give very single drop of nous, knowledge, have a strong mindset and physical energy.
“It’s going to take everything to get results against the best teams in the world and in Europe, and Liverpool are one of them. They’re one of the teams we’re chasing.
“What we’ve done the last four years is what we’re striving towards to go past them. They had a bad spell with injuries last year but are now back to their best.”
While Mo Salah’s current form has seen many declare him as the best player in the world, Solskjaer hailed United star Cristiano Ronaldo as the best on the planet.
“I’ll always back Cristiano in any competition,” said Solskjaer. “He’s unique and his goalscoring record has been fantastic, but that being said, Salah is at the moment on fire.
“You see some of the goals he’s scored lately and we have to be at our best to play against him. We have to enjoy these players from afar – not Sunday, that’s too close.
“But we’ve got to do a good job and not just against him. I’m a big admirer of the front line, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino, maybe Diogo Jota will play.
“They are players you have to focus on and you have to be nailed on for 90 mins to keep a clean sheet.”
