Shaqiri outlines transfer wish despite Klopp’s apology over Liverpool snubs

Xherdan Shaqiri has asked to leave Liverpool this summer and could potentially return to Italy, with Lazio reportedly showing interest in the 29-year-old.

In an interview with Corriere dello Sport the Liverpool winger said he’s “honoured” by Lazio’s interest and hinted that he could be ready for a “new challenge” under Maurizio Sarri at the Stadio Olympico.

Shaqiri has previously spent six months in Italy following a brief stint with Inter Milan between January and August in 2015, and Liverpool may be ready to sell the Swiss international as he enters the final year of his contract.

Shaqiri joined Liverpool back in 2018 for just £13million from Stoke City but has struggled to break into the first team since his arrival, only making 45 league appearances for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

This is despite the Liverpool manager saying sorry to Shaqiri back in 2019 after he went seven months without a single start.

It is understood that Liverpool have accepted his desire to leave – and the Swiss international admitted: “I told Liverpool that I feel ready for a new challenge.

“They accepted my wish and will seriously consider the offers that will come. They will not stop me.”

The winger, who previously played in England with Stoke before arriving at Anfield, added: “The important thing at this moment in my career is to be able to play regularly, but that hasn’t always been the case the last three seasons.

“I’m only 29-years-old, I have played in some of the best leagues in Europe and I would like to continue being a part of them.”

Shaqiri excelled during Euro 2020 as three goals and an assist helped Switzerland reach the quarter-finals, and his summer performances have clearly attracted potential suitors to prize him away from Anfield.

Lazio appear to be the favourites to land the Liverpool winger and when asked about a potential move Shaqiri admitted Sarri’s style of play would suit him and praised the impact of Lazio sporting director Igli Tare.

He added: “Igli Tare has been doing an excellent job at Lazio for years. If it’s true that he has great respect for me, then I’m honoured.

“I have been following Lazio for a long time, they are a top team. In general, due to my characteristics, I like to play more attacking football and Sarri practices it. It would be intriguing.”

Lazio have already re-signed Felipe Anderson from West Ham United and with Joaquin Correa linked with a move elsewhere and Andreas Periera returning to Manchester United, Shaqiri would be a welcome addition.
