Roma were humiliated by Norway as they lost 6-1 to Bodø/Glimt in Europe with Jose Mourinho lamenting his players which has drawn a response from Lorenzo Pellegrini
Roma’s Lorenzo Pellegrini labelled his side’s defeat at Norwegian minnows Bodø/Glimt as “embarrassing” and a “slap in the face”.
The Italians shipped six against their opponents who, whilst being top of their domestic league, have never made an inroads in European competition.
Roma trailed 2-1 at the break but Jose Mourinho watched on as his much changed side capitulated in second-half, conceding four more.
It is the first time in the Special One’s career as a manager – which spans 1008 games – that one of his teams has conceded six goals.
The Giallorossi only appointed Mourinho in the summer and he has Roma sat fourth in Serie A.
But, as he did on numerous occasions in England, the Portuguese coach spoke candidly about his players and his decision to rotate the starting XI.
He told told Sky Sport Italia the “responsibility is mine” and his new look line-up was done with “good intentions”.
However, Mourinho used the devastating defeat to highlight how thin Roma’s squad is as he threw those involved under the bus.
“Every defeat does damage. I spoke to the players and was honest. I was honest with them, I cannot be honest with you,” he added.
“I never disguised the fact we were a squad with real limitations. We have 13 players who represent one team, the others are on a different level.
“At least the positive thing from now on is that nobody will ask me why I always use the same players.”
After the game, Roma players went over to the travelling contingent and appeared to apologise for their performance.
Pellegrini, who appeared from the subs bench, as did Tammy Abraham and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, apologised for the poor display and claimed he was angry with the result.
“There’s little I can say, I can only apologise and get back on track stronger than before,” he said.
“We said what we needed to in the locker room and it remains there.

“Sometimes you need a slap to learn and we got a slap in the face today, one we fully deserved. We’ve got to make sure that we learn from this embarrassment and keep that attitude for the rest of the season.”
He continued: “I am angry. I am not worried, not disappointed, just angry. From tomorrow we have to work even harder, because there are games to be won.”
Roma’s defeat in Scandinavia comes after their reverse at Juventus at the weekend.
Serie A pacesetters Napoli are next up for Mourinho’s side and will visit the Stadio Olympico this weekend.
“Our main team is playing well, deserved more points this season and has the right mentality. We will play with that mentality on Sunday,” said the Special One.
