Laporta believes Barcelona can escape financial hole in ’18 months’

Barcelona midfielder Pedri has ended speculation linking him with a move away from the La Liga titans after penning a new contract that ties him to the Camp Nou until 2026.

The same contract includes a jaw-dropping release clause that ensures anyone wanting to pry Pedri away from Barcelona will have to fork out €1bn to do so.

Given the club’s precarious financial situation, it was seen as crucial that Barca not only tie down the stars they have among their current crop, but also ensure they are unable to leave for a cut-price fee.

The news of Pedri’s extension will make for unwelcome reading for Liverpool fans after the Reds were touted with a potential mega-money move for the 18-year-old earlier this year.

Pedri has signed a new deal with Barcelona keeping him at the club until 2026

Speaking after the contract had been officially confirmed by the club, Pedri revealed : “It is a very happy day, my illusion is to be here for many years.

“It is true that it is a difficult moment, but it is the best club in the world, it will get up and achieve many things although now I want to remember my friends from La Palma because they are going through a difficult time.

“We will help in whatever they need and they will get ahead soon. I am very happy to sign until 2026 and I hope there will be more.

“Being in this club I aspire to win everything, every year.”

While Liverpool were one club touted with a mega-money move for Pedri, they were not the only European super club linked with the midfielder.

Fierce rivals Real Madrid emerged as a shock name in the running, but the teenager has since quashed any talk of a switch to the Santiago Bernabeu.

“I don’t have to focus on that question. Real Madrid is our eternal rival, I always want to beat them,” Pedri explained.

Pedri acknowledged his astonishing achievements, revealing: “I am aware of what I have achieved but I want to take it naturally, my parents are already in charge of lowering me if one day I am up.”

Those at the top of the Barca hierarchy will be overjoyed that Pedri has agreed to commit his long-term future to the club given the troubled times they currently find themselves in.

The La Liga titans languish as low as ninth in the league table, while enduring their worst start to a Champions League campaign ever.

Pressure continues to mount on Ronald Koeman, as just seven games in it appears Barca are all but out of the title race.

The Catalan outfit are five points adrift of fierce rivals Real Madrid who occupy top spot.
