Neville recounts best piece of advice from Sir Alex Ferguson at Man Utd

Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville has recounted the best piece of advice legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson gave him during his near-20-year spell at the club.

Neville emerged from the Red Devils ’ academy to become the first-choice right-back under Ferguson in the early 1990s, spending his entire playing career at Old Trafford.

Ferguson was United manager for the entirety of Neville’s career, with the Scot naming him club captain when Roy Keane departed in 2005.

Neville became one of the best right-backs of his generation under Ferguson’s tutelage, making nearly 600 appearances for United and winning 85 England caps.

After retiring in 2011, he would go on to follow Ferguson into coaching, first as an assistant manager to Roy Hodgson with England.

The 46-year-old then had an ill-fated spell in charge of Valencia, his only senior management job to date.

Instead, it is in punditry where Neville has excelled, with the former right-back recently being named as one of ITV’s pundits for Euro 2020.

He also recently sat down with his former boss Ferguson for a wide-ranging interview about his career in football.

The pair had a successful spell together at United, winning eight Premier League, three FA Cups and two Champions League titles.

And Neville has now disclosed to supporters the best piece of advice that was ever given to him by Ferguson.

The former England captain was taking part in a question and answer session with followers of his Twitter account on Monday evening.

One Red Devils fan highlighted his recent interview with Ferguson and asked about what advice the Scot had given to his former player.

“SAF [Sir Alex Ferguson] looked in good form/health during your interview. What was the best piece of advice he gave you, or you heard him hand out?” the supporter asked.

Neville responded to the question with a memorable quote that Ferguson had given to him during their time at Old Trafford.

“You have a choice every day. Work hard and never give in. Or don’t. You choose it’s up to you!” Neville wrote in a quote tweet of the fan’s question about Ferguson’s advice.

Several supporters responded to Neville’s disclosure with celebration and praying emojis, suggesting they approved of Ferguson’s message.

Some though did seek to make fun of the piece of advice that Ferguson was delivering, with one supporter even comparing the legendary manager to Star Wars character Yoda.

“Are you sure that was Sir Alex Ferguson and not Yoda..?!” they wrote in reply to Neville’s tweet.

“I choose to work hard and afterwards watch Netflix,” another fan added.

Neville’s interview with his former boss came ahead of the release of a new documentary which will chart the life of legendary manager Ferguson.

It is set for release this week, after the Red Devils face Valencia in this season’s Europa League final.
