Man Utd’s £150m transfer plans change following Cavani’s contract extension

Mason Greenwood is the star benefiting most from Edinson Cavani’s stay at Old Trafford – and it could save Manchester United £150 million.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his coaching staff believe Greenwood has all the tools to succeed Cavani as an out and out centre-forward.

And with United being linked to Borussia Dortmund goal machine Erling Haaland and Tottenham striker Harry Kane – both valued at £150 million – Greenwood’s conversion to a central striker is a hot topic at the club’s Carrington training complex.

Solskjaer is said to be excited at the prospect of Greenwood learning from the experienced Uruguayan star for another year after the 34-year-old recently signed a one-year contract extension to stay in Manchester next season.

And United’s renewed interest in £90million-rated Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho is thought to be back on the agenda because of Greenwood’s potential to be the club’s future number nine.

After watching the pair dovetail during training and matches United’s hierarchy are convinced Greenwood is learning from one of the very best.

It’s emerged the 19-year-old star worked closely with the former Paris Saint Germain forward at United’s Carrington training complex during the last international break after Greenwood pulled out of the England U-21 squad.

Greenwood spent valuable time with Cavani back at United’s training base after withdrawing from the three-match U-21 group stage games in Slovenia in March.

And the teenager’s winning goal against Brighton last month in the match immediately after the international break had all the hall marks of the South American star.

Paul Scholes spotted the centre-forward potential in Greenwood eighteen months ago comparing the youngster to Robin van Persie.

“I think they both have that stylish way about them with that left foot. It’s almost like a bit of Velcro at times. They’re both great finishers, everything seems so smooth” said the Old Trafford legend.

“We talk about United not having number nines, but he could be a number nine because of that sheer composure in front of goal.

“He just calms himself down and takes a touch.”

Greenwood’s emergence as a No.9 in the making is good news for Solskjaer and United’s money men – but it spells trouble for Anthony Martial.

The French striker suffered a knee injury playing against Kazakhstan and has missed United’s last eleven games.

It’s unclear if he will figure again this season but his failure to tie down the central striking position has cast doubt on his ability to operate as a dedicated No.9.

And it’s not only on the pitch where Solskjaer believes Cavani is having a major influence on Greenwood.

Cavani has stayed at the top with the same kind of focus and dedication to looking after his lifestyle habits and fitness as another former United icon, Cristiano Ronaldo.

And the United boss is certain Greenwood’s close proximity to Cavani is reaping dividends with Soslkjaer impressed at the youngster’s sharper focus since his troubles with England last year.

Greenwood and Manchester City star Phil Foden were sent home from Iceland by England boss Gareth Southgate for breaching Covid protocols – and the United star hasn’t represented his country since.

It’s believed that’s still left an after-taste at United with some senior club officials unhappy at the harsh treatment handed to Greenwood.

Southgate is due to unveil his Euro squad in nine days time – with no indication whether Greenwood will feature in his plans despite eight goals in his last 12 games for United.
