Khabib Nurmagomedov appears to have pipped his nemesis Conor McGregor to becoming a shareholder within UFC after the Russian confirmed his investment
Former UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov has revealed he has purchased shares in the promotion.
Nurmagomedov walked away from the premier mixed martial arts promotion with an undefeated record last October.
The 32-year-old emotionally retired after defeating Justin Gaethje on Fight Island and registering his 29th professional victory.
After leaving the octagon, Nurmagomedov – who became Russia’s first champion in UFC – appears to have concentrated on developing his business ventures.
UFC’s parent company Endeavour became a publicly traded entity, and Nurmagomedov has already made his move.
When asked if he had acquired shares in Endeavour, Nurmagomedov said: “Who gave you this information?
“Yes, I am already there. UFC has already gone to IPO and I have some part of the shares.”
He was then asked if his role as a shareholder permits him to influence decision-making and allow his voice to be heard within the promotion.
“Yes it is [possible],” replied Nurmagomedov. “We discussed this topic with Dana White in a lot of our meetings.
“I see great prospects for UFC. They went to IPO and they have very great prospects.”
One question asked if the shares were gifted to the Russian from White, Nurmagomedov replied sternly: “I don’t like gifts.
“We can say that I bought UFC stock. This will be true.”
Endeavour is listed on the New York Stock Exchange – and Nurmagomedov’s investment has dealt a blow to Conor McGregor.
After his dramatic victory over Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 to become the first fighter in UFC history to hold two belts at the same time, McGregor admitted he wanted equity in the company.
“They’ve got to come talk to me now because no one’s came and talked to me since the sale has happened as a businessman,” McGregor demanded. “I’ve been approached as, ‘Hello’ and that type of stuff, but I’ve earned something.
“Who owns the company now? People have shares. Celebrities. Conan O’Brien owns the UFC now.
“Where’s my share? Where’s my equity? If I’m the one that’s bringing this, they’ve got to come talk to me now.
“I’ve got both belts, family on the way. If you want me to stick around, if you want me to keep doing [this], let’s talk – but I want the ownership now.
“I want the equal share. I want what I deserve, what I’ve earned.”
McGregor has since had three children while Nurmagomedov reportedly signed a contract to play professional football for Russian third division side FC Legion Dynamo.
However, Nurmagomedov’s manager has since denied the claim, tweeting: “Fake news.”
