England didn’t create “clear cut chances” – Gareth Southgate

Harry Kane has been blamed for his failed transfer to Manchester City in the transfer window. The Tottenham star told Daniel Levy he wanted to leave for the Etihad but was prevented.

Former Arsenal star Paul Merson has told Kane that it is his fault that a move to City failed to go through.

And in light of their 0-0 match against Southampton, Pep Guardiola’s need for a striker could not have been made more obvious.

City have looked a level more toothless in front of goal after losing Sergio Aguero on a free transfer.

Pep Guardiola was keen on signing Kane over the summer but Tottenham would not even answer their calls.

Spurs chief Levy insisted that the striker was not for sale despite two bids being made over the summer.

But ex-Arsenal star Merson has insisted that the problem is down to Kane, who did try force a move through to the Etihad over the summer.

He told talkSPORT: “If you’re Harry Kane, you’re standing up front thinking, ‘Should I have really pushed a little bit harder? Should I have?’

“At the end of the day, you’ve got to think of your future.

“There’s no point sitting there thinking, ‘I don’t want to be disliked’, ‘I don’t want people to think that I’m ungrateful’ and all that.

“He’s done an unbelievable job for Tottenham. He needed to move on. He’s got to think of his future. This lad deserves to win trophies.

“He’s a phenomenal footballer and I think he should have pushed and pushed to get that move.

“He wouldn’t have become a bad person; I think people would have understood.”

However, Merson believes City could make a return for Kane in January if all parties start negotiating – which looks unlikely.

“At the moment, when I look at Man City, Man City need Harry Kane, for me,” he said.

“For me, he’s the best centre-forward in the league by a distance and I really mean that, even though plays for Tottenham, I do mean that.

“I think Man City need to get him, maybe even if it comes down to January, I think he needs to move on for his career.

“He needs to sit with his grandchildren in 20-30 years’ time and they’re sitting on his lap and he goes, ‘Yeah, I won this, this and this’.

“At the end of the day, if you stay at Tottenham, you’ve got to win the Golden Boot and that looks a million miles away as well, at the moment.”
