Liverpool sporting director Michael Edwards is reportedly leading an unlikely transfer push for Barcelona star Ousmane Dembele.

Edwards is said to be keen on capitalising on the well-document financial issues at the La Liga club, who find themselves in £1.16 billion worth of debt.

Dembele arrived at the Camp Nou from Borussia Dortmund in 2017 for a whopping £96.8 million but persistent injury issues have seen him struggle for consistent minutes.

Subsequently, the 24-year-old has been unable to make himself a staple of the Barca starting XI over the proceeding four years, with his contract set to expire next summer.

TEAMtalk claim that the Reds, who were tagged with interest in the France international upon his breakthrough at Rennes and Dortmund, are eyeing up a deal on a free transfer in 2022.

Dembele is reportedly wanted by Liverpool

The winger, equally gifted on both feet, is currently out injured with a hamstring problem sustained at the European Championships.

Dembele could be looking for a fresh start amid the chaos at Barcelona and Jurgen Klopp ‘s ageing forward line will soon need refreshing, with Mohamed Salah notably out of contract in 2023 and yet to agree fresh terms.

By the time next season begins, Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Salah will all be 30.

The trio’s magic – at least as a group – has showed signs of waning in recent months, with 2020 addition Diogo Jota featuring more and more prominently in place of Firmino.

Mane went through numerous goal droughts last term and despite a solid start to the new campaign, remains well below Salah’s supreme level.

But Dembele’s injury woes certainly put a potential move in doubt, while his current boss is desperate to keep him in Catalonia.

Ronald Koeman is evidently a big fan of the two-footed Frenchman, stating that he will be “vital” for the Blaugrana once he returns to full fitness.

Recently asked about Dembele, the under-fire Dutch tactician said: “First, [I hope] that he renews his contract, because it is his last year and for the club it is important that he renew.”

“Dembele is a very, very good player if he is physically well. When he recovers he will be a vital footballer.”

Upon the news of his ongoing four-month lay-off, Koeman told his club’s website : “I am very disappointed with his injury.

“Also, the situation with his contract is complicated. It is a pity for himself and for us.”

The former Everton and Southampton manager added: “He brought us a lot last year, different from what we have. I hope he can come back soon.”
