Manchester United confirmed the signing of Cristiano Ronaldo from Juventus on Tuesday and are now focused on outgoings ahead of the close of the market.

The only permanent exit from United’s first-team squad this summer so far has been goalkeeper Sergio Romero, who departed upon the expiration of his contract.

Daniel James is set to leave Old Trafford on a permanent basis as Leeds United have agreed a transfer fee worth an initial £25million along with add-ons.

Yet United are still keen to slim down their wage bill before the close of play and one player who Ronaldo’s arrival raises questions over is Edinson Cavani.

The Uruguayan striker penned a new one-year contract at Old Trafford at the tail end of last season after an impressive debut campaign at Old Trafford, when he bagged 17 goals and provided six assists.

Cavani’s central striking role is now under the greatest threat following on from Ronaldo’s arrival with Mason Greenwood also thriving in that position in the early weeks of the campaign.

United also have Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Anthony Martial in attacking positions meaning that rotation is likely to be used more frequently by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer this campaign.

A report from Catalan media outlet El Mundo Deportivo outlines how Cavani has been offered to Barcelona, who are in the market for a striker.

Sergio Aguero arrived at the Camp Nou this summer but is injured until November while the exit of Lionel Messi has left a gap in the Catalan club’s attacking ranks.

It is said that Barca highly value Cavani’s skillset and believe that he could add a lot of value to their ranks, but their primary concern is over funding the striker’s wages.

Catalan-based RAC1 radio journalist Gerard Romero claimed on Tuesday that Barca were in ‘advanced negotiations’ to sign the striker.

Both reports claim that any deal will not be easy and with the Catalan club’s well documented financial issues, it remains unclear if they would be able to fund the player’s wages.

Furthermore, Cavani would command a transfer fee as he has one year remaining on his contract and United are unlikely to sanction his exit without an appropriate bid.

Not only are Cavani and Ronaldo similar in playing style but they also share the same number, with Ronaldo’s ‘CR7’ brand clashing with the Uruguayan striker’s current shirt number at the club.

There have been suggestions that the exit of James would allow Cavani to swap the number 7 for the vacant 21 – which he wears at international level for the South American nation – which would free up his shirt for the incoming Portuguese forward.
