Dani Alves has informed Barcelona that he wants to return to the club as he attended Wednesday night’s Champions League clash against Dynamo Kiev.

The Brazilian full-back watched on from the VIP box at the Camp Nou having told the Catalan giants that he is open to joining them in January, and he is now awaiting a response.

The 38-year-old – who captained Brazil to the gold medal in this summer’s Olympic Games in Tokyo – is currently a free agent after leaving Sao Paulo, his boyhood club, last month.

The veteran right-back has won more trophies throughout his professional career than any other current active player – winning a total of 41 tournaments at senior level over a 19-year period, alongside the gold medal at this summer’s Olympics.

His remarkable career saw him return to the Brazil international squad – where he has now been capped in 119 matches – earlier this year after an 18-month absence.

Alves was inspirational in helping his nation landing the Copa America title in 2019 – when he was named as Player of the Tournament – in the same year that he signed for Sao Paulo.

Yet he left the Brazilian club last month due to the club said to owe him outstanding wages, causing him not to show up for training and his eventual exit.

The right-back – who has also played for Sevilla, Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain – is most well-known for his glittering eight-year stint at the Camp Nou between 2008 and 2016.

Alves made just shy of 400 first-team appearances for the Blaugrana in a trophy-laden period which included six La Liga titles and three Champions League crowns.

Earlier this month Alves confirmed he was open to a return to Barcelona : “It would sound very opportunistic to say that Barca need me now.

“I always said that I left because I saw things were not the way I thought they should be.

“You never want to see everything that [has] ended up happening since I left. I’ve said that when Barca need me and want me, I would be at their disposal regardless of where I am.

“The affection, love and respect I have for this club is too much.

“If Barca think they need me, they just have to call me. I still think I can contribute anywhere, but more at Barca because of the number of young players that they have now.”

Alves will turn 39 in May next year but he is hopeful of adding to his record trophy haul with his next move.

He added: “I always look for a club that allows me to compete with the greats, fight for titles and be decisive wherever I am.

“I do not consider another scenario that is not this. It was for this reason that I chose Sevilla, Barcelona, and all the places where I went.

“I want to bring a winning, fighting and conscious mentality wherever I go.”

Barca already have Sergino Dest and Oscar Mingueza as options in the right-back position but could be tempted to seal a remarkable return for Alves as a free agent.
