Eubank Jr and Golovkin have respective fights lined up later this year but talks have already begun for a fight between the two to take place in May 2022
Talks have already begun for a middleweight fight in 2022 between Chris Eubank Jr and Gennady Golovkin, despite both men having fights lined up later this year.
Eubank is coming off a stoppage win against Wanik Awdijan earlier this month.
IBF middleweight Golovkin is yet to fight in 2021, but the Kazakhstani is expected to face WBA champion Ryota Murata in a unification fight on December 28.
A fight against Golovkin has been on Eubank’s radar ever since the Brit moved back up to 160lbs from super-middleweight in 2019.
Eubank has been offered a fight against British rival Liam Williams in December.
And BOXXER promoter Ben Shalom says talks have already begun for a fight between Eubank and Golovkin.
“Talks have started. Contact has been made with Golovkin’s team and talks are progressing. They want the fight with Eubank Jr and we’re looking at a May date,” Shalmon told Sky Sports.
“There are huge fights out there for Eubank Jr, like Billy Joe Saunders and Demetrius Andrade.
“He wants to avenge the Billy Joe defeat. He feels like he was very young, had a slow start, and didn’t have a trainer back then. He thinks it would be a different story next time.
“But the Golovkin fight is the huge one for his legacy. There’s a reason why Eubank Jr’s trainer is Roy Jones Jr – he wants to be around the best, and in the ring with the best.”
Golovkin has only fought three times since losing his rematch against pound-for-pound No.1 Canelo Alvarez in 2018.
“Triple G” knocked out Steve Rolls in June 2019 and had a tough outing against Sergiy Derevyanchenko later that year, winning a hard-fought unanimous decision.
The two-time middleweight champion defended his belt with a stoppage win against Kamil Szeremeta last December.

Eubank won the WBA interim title against Matt Koborov in his 160lbs return but didn’t fight again for over 18-months.
He returned in May to outpoint Matt Morrison and stopped Awdijan in the fifth round on October 16.
Welshman Williams has called out Eubank several times for a fight and Shalom says the two have a genuine dislike for each other ahead of their potential clash in December.
“They have a genuine dislike for each other that has been brewing for years. It is Eubank Jr’s big moment to get into contention for world title fights against the likes of Golovkin” Shalom continued.
“We will be making an offer to Liam so we’ll see if he really wants it. Hopefully we can get it on in December.”
