The Cambridges are said to be planning a move to Berkshire from their current home in Norfolk with their children, George, eight, Charlotte, six, and three-year-old Louis
William and Kate may soon be allowed to live at Windsor Castle – a privilege Harry and Meghan once coveted – it is claimed.
The Cambridges are said to be planning a move to Berkshire from their current home in Norfolk with their children, George, eight, Charlotte, six, and three-year-old Louis.
Experts have said the Sussexes, who quit royal duties for good last year, would likely be unhappy if it happened.
Royal commentator Daniela Elser said “it would be hard not to read this as something of a slap in the face for the self-exiled Sussexes”.
The move would take William and Kate closer to her family.
Ms Elser wrote, the Daily Star reports : “The Crown Estate boasts more than 230 properties, meaning that Her Majesty has incredible variety when it comes to gifting family members a grace and favour home. (Translation: Here, have a free house.)
“When Harry and Meghan wed, in 2018, it was believed they would be moving out of the tinky Nottingham Cottage in the grounds of Kensington Palace, where they had been living, and into one of the palace’s massive private apartments.
“Instead, in November, 2018 it was announced they would instead live in Frogmore Cottage, a property on the Windsor estate.
“It later emerged that this had not been the couple’s first choice and that in fact they had originally asked his grandmother if they could live in Windsor Castle.
“In August 2019 the Times broke the news that Harry and Meghan ‘initially had higher hopes’ than Frogmore Cottage.
“Her answer? Nein. Non. Niente.”
The Cambridges now appear keen on a move to Windsor, according to reports.
It has been suggested they could even ask Her Majesty if they can move into Windsor Castle – just like Harry and Meghan did.
A source told the Daily Mail: “Anmer Hall made sense while William was a helicopter pilot in East Anglia and it was useful for Christmases at Sandringham, but it doesn’t really work anymore.
“It’s a little too far away for weekends, but Windsor is a perfect compromise. They are eyeing up options in the area.”
A royal source also told Vanity Fair: “William and Kate have been talking to their close friends about leaving Kensington Palace where they feel very overlooked.
“William and Kate are very seriously considering a move to Windsor, and it has been discussed with the Queen. There are options at Windsor Castle, which is vast, and being close to the Queen, who is 95, makes sense to the family.”
There are other advantages if the Cambridges choose to move, including Kate’s parents, Michael and Carole Middleton, being nearby in Bucklebury, Berkshire.
Kate’s sister Pippa, her husband James Matthews, also live in the village with their two children.
It could also be a boost to the Queen to have William and Kate nearby after the death of her husband, Prince Philip.
