Teen Motherwell star shines as finalist in UK Country Music Awards 2021

Young singer-songwriter Mayah Herlihy, 14, is the toast of the town after being the youngest ever artist to be nominated as a finalist in UK Country Radio’s UK Female Country Singer of the Year and UK Country Artist of the Year awards.

Mayah told Lanarkshire Live: “I really never expected to be nominated for an award, never mind being a finalist and I’m the youngest to be nominated for the UK Female Country Singer of the Year award.

“It’s really inspiring as I’ve only been doing it for such a short amount of time.

“The final is on September 25 and it’s all down to the judges from UK Country Radio.

“I’m one of the finalists for two of the awards. There are 10 finalists for the UK Country Artist of the Year, and five for the UK Female Country Singer of the Year.

“No one was really expecting it. Even being nominated was a massive shock. To be a finalist is very exciting for everyone.”

And Mayah’s manager, David Blair of 23 Music Management, is extremely proud of his young protege and her amazing achievements.

He beamed: “For Mayah to be nominated in the UK Country Radio Country Artist of the Year and UK Female Country Singer categories at only 14-years-old is a remarkable achievement and very well deserved.

“Having hit number one in online charts with two of her first three singles this year and to become the youngest ever musician to be Single of the Week on BBC Radio Scotland’s The Afternoon Show is further testament to the deserved recognition her talent is receiving.

“The future looks very bright for Mayah and it’s an honour and a pleasure to be helping her along the way.”

The grounded youngster continues to be supported by proud parents Joanne and Martin and siblings, Brendan and Bonnie in her quest for stardom.

And Mayah is also popular with listeners at her local radio station in her former home of Peterhead, having appeared as a guest on Buchan Radio during her recent visit to the town.

Joanne told us: “Mayah went in and did the interview and played a couple of songs and they were delighted that she took the time to come and see them.”

Since having scooped top spot in Peterhead’s Got Talent in 2017, Mayah continues to take the country music charts by storm and has already notched up three successful singles, with her acclaimed debut My Way, followed closely by second single Follow the Sunshine and third song Your Fight, in honour of her cousin Mel, with proceeds donated to the Beatson Cancer Charity – and all three were recorded and produced at the Coatbridge-based Main Street Records label.

She said: “Main Street Records were also very surprised and I was up at the studio only a few days ago and they were really proud of me because of how far I’ve come in such a short amount of time.”

In response to her nominations, Brian Imrie of Main Street Records told us: “We are all extremely proud of Mayah and her work she does with us at Main Street Records. We are all rooting for our local star!”

The sky really is the limit for this talented young musician who is grateful for the continued support of her Lanarkshire fans.

In a recent Facebook post she enthused: “So so so beyond excited to find out I’m a finalist for the UK Female Country Singer of the Year and THE TOP AWARD UK Country Artist of the Year UKCountryRadio.com

“Can’t thank you all enough for nominating me. So much love to you all.”
