Rutherglen community councillor says selfish drivers are causing a health risk

Selfish shoppers parking outside a shopping precinct are causing a health and safety risk, a local community councillor has warned.

Motorists are continually parking in the bus lane on Rutherglen Main Street, in front of the Rutherglen Exchange Shopping Centre.

Barry Cathie, a community councillor for Rutherglen, is now concerned that parked cars would cause a hindrance for any ambulances if a medical emergency were to occur – as well as disrupting the local bus services that the lane is supposed to be used for.

And Barry added that the problem appears to be getting worse.

He told Lanarkshire Live : “The amount of cars that are being parked on the bus lane outside the Rutherglen exchange centre is becoming an ongoing issue and this needs nipped in the bud.

“They are not only blocking access for local buses but also for emergency vehicles to gain access for emergencies.

“The people doing this are being selfish, and not thinking of the problems that this could cause for others.

“This is not acceptable and needs to be dealt with. I have people coming to me in the street and saying how bad it is getting and even pointed to one vehicle that was parked facing the wrong direction.

“People need to be aware that this is unacceptable and shouldn’t continue.”

The problems come after numerous locals have complained about the shopping centre’s own car park in recent years

We previously reported how a number of shoppers were left furious with Gemini Parking Solutions, who run the arcade’s parking facilities, after being sent letters asking them to stump up fines for tickets they had already paid for.

Rutherglen Exchange Shopping Centre were contacted for comment.
