Plans have been submitted to install a new gym in Wishaw town centre.
The proposals, submitted to North Lanarkshire Council’s planning department, would see a new gym situated on Kirk Road, on the site of the former Four Ways indoor market, which has been empty for some considerable time.
The proposed use is a gym facility which will be open to the public seven days a week.
The supporting statement on the council’s planning website states: “The facility shall be run and occupied by New Age Fitness Ltd, a local company with existing facilities in Hamilton and Coatbridge.
“New Age Fitness has a reputation of bringing first class health and fitness facilities (with a fitout cost of approximately £500,000) to the local community for a budget price and at this time of low demand for bricks and mortar retail units this will bring much needed investment into the area with this empty building being recycled for the long term.
“The business is aimed primarily at the budget end i.e. no frills end of the market, which is growing in numbers.
“There will only be space for fitness classes, general cardio and weight training with associated changing facilities.
“The gym will be looking to employ 14 full and part-time members of staff.
“The site has private customer parking for 40 vehicles and facilities for waste storage on site.
“The experience gained from the other sites would suggest that the parking on site would cover all but the busiest times and a public car park directly across the road on Kirk Street would accommodate any overspill.”
If permission is granted, the proposed opening hours for the gym would be 7am to 10pm Monday to Friday and 10am to 5pm on the weekend.

There is very little exterior changes to the building proposed, the main area is to provide an entrance screen and tidy up the facade bringing it into line with the adjoining unit.
