Arsenal were handed an embarrassing opening day defeat in the Premier League by newcomers Brentford in a 2-0 loss in south London to put Mikel Arteta under pressure already
Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira has admitted he was not surprised by his former club’s defeat to Brentford on the opening day of the season.
Thomas Frank’s side were playing their first-ever match in the Premier League and won with ease at home in a 2-0 result over their London rivals.
The Bees outclassed their more illustrious foes in almost every department, pressing from the first minute and not giving the Gunners a moment’s rest.
They fully deserved their lead when Sergi Canos smashed the ball past Leno to send the home fans into a frenzy.
When asked whether the result surprised him, the Premier League great said: “No, I think they just played with their strengths.
“I think they went on the field with really great work ethic, with a lot of passion, and it didn’t surprise me they won against Arsenal. They will do well in the league.
“They are well organised. They are playing football that – I will say it suits them and it will be a tough game for us.
“But I think the teams we play afterwards will be as well really challenging for them. And like I said earlier on, there is not an easy game in the Premier League.”
Vieira lost his managerial debut since joining the Eagles in the summer when they were battered by Chelsea 3-0 at Stamford Bridge.
Palace take on Brentford at Selhurst Park today but they face a side high on confidence and the Frenchman has already laid out a plan.

He said: “What we need to do is first to think about the way we want to play the game. I think we have to concentrate on the quality of football that we want to play and that will allow us to win football matches.
“These three points are important, but the next one against West Ham will be really important and the one against Chelsea obviously we lost, was really important.

“So I don’t want to put more pressure on this one than before, or the next one.
“Every single game is not going to be easy, every single one will have different challenges and we have to be prepared, we have to be ready for those.”
