McDonald’s launches first plant-based burger

McDonald’s will introduce the new McPlant burger in 250 restaurants on Wednesday as the fast food giant attempts to do more to “look after the planet”.

The new vegan burger will be available at every branch in the UK from January 1 but, for the moment, it’s being offered at selected restaurants.

It includes a Beyond Meat patty and vegan cheese topped with gherkins, tomato, lettuce, ketchup and a vegan burger sauce in a classic sesame seed bun.

Prices will vary between restaurants but will be either £3.49 or £4.89 as part of a meal with chips and a drink, in line with other McDonald’s products.

And when Mirror Online was invited to McDonald’s HQ to try the new meal, we found it “very decent offering” and suggested some will “struggle to believe that it doesn’t contain meat.”

McDonald’s UK & Ireland wants to achieving net zero emissions by 2050 to support the planet and the communities it serves.

McDonald’s is also planning to ensure customer packaging is made from renewable, recycled, or certified sources, and will be recyclable or compostable by 2024.

The firm also plans to hire a Nutrition Innovation Council who will work on developing more balanced menu options.

Paul Pomroy, Chief Executive of McDonald’s UK & Ireland, said: “McDonald’s has a long history of taking action where it really matters to the communities we serve. But we are at a moment now where we need to accelerate our ambition and work even harder to look after each other and the planet.”
