Mason Mount confesses his brilliant hat-trick for Chelsea was a timely one which eases the pressure of his slow start to the season.

The attacking midfielder opened the scoring and added two more goals late on as the Blues inflicted a 7-0 thrashing on Premier League stragglers Norwich City.

It marked the first time Mount, 22, had scored more than once in a match for Chelsea, and he also chipped in with an assist during his masterful display at Stamford Bridge.

The England international is aiming to improve on his tally of nine goals from last season but was yet to open his account for the current campaign going into the clash with Canaries.

Mount was delighted to end his drought emphatically on Saturday afternoon and hailed a “very special” result in west London.

The hat-trick hero told BT Sport after the match: “I put pressure on myself before the game to get goals as it’s been a long time and I think this is the first time I’ve ever got more than one goal in a game for Chelsea.

“It’s a big moment for me personally to score three at home at Stamford Bridge, it’s very special.

“You get into positions to score and I was thinking there would be a game where it all comes together – and that was today.”

Mount fired Chelsea ahead in the eighth minute with a powerful strike before setting up Reece James just before half-time to make it 3-0 and open the floodgates.

Callum Hudson-Odoi, Ben Chilwell and a Max Aarons own-goal were also on the scoresheet for Chelsea by the time Mount stepped up to take a penalty in the closing minutes.

The Blues academy graduate saw his initial effort saved but VAR ordered the spot kick be retaken after finding Norwich goalkeeper Tim Krul was off his line.

“We were at it from the beginning and on it throughout the whole game.

“Even being a couple up going into the second half we never dropped our standards.”

Chelsea’s thumping victory means they will end the weekend where they began it – at the top of the Premier League table – with seven wins in nine top-flight games.

It also piles pressure on Liverpool to get a result at Manchester United on Sunday evening, or else the gap to the league-leaders will grow.
