Line of Duty viewers convinced that H got away with lie after final ‘smirk’

*Spoiler warning for Line of Duty series six*

Line of Duty fans have been left convinced that H got away with a lie in the final episode of series six.

The final episode saw Ian Buckells (Nigel Boyle) exposed as the villainous corrupt officer conspiring with the Organised Crime Group (OCG).

After a tense interview scene with the trio of Superintendent Ted Hastings ( Adrian Dunbar ), DI Kate Fleming ( Vicky McClure ), and DI Steve Arnott ( Martin Compston ), Buckells was led away back to prison.

However, in the closing scenes, the post-script from writer Jed Mercurio revealed that Central Police had applied for public interest immunity in the case of Ian Buckells, meaning institutional corruption was likely to go unchecked.

In his final scenes, Buckells was led to his cell and was seen smirking in his final moments.

So, had he gotten away with convincing AC-12 of something they should not have believed?

Some viewers flocked to Twitter to share their theories that there remains more to be exposed and believed that Buckells was lying.

One fan of the series tweeted: “love the smirk that buckells gives when he’s in his cell because he’s clearly not the top corrupt officer just taken the fall for it. Especially with osbornes friends being promoted to senior positions it was made clear ac-12 barely scratched the surface of corruption #Lineofduty ”.

Another viewer noted: “Nah not feeling it #lineofduty let down crossed my mind then the wee smirk from buckells is more to come???”

Meanwhile, another Line of Duty fan commented: Yes, and I love @jed_mercurio is pushing that message & urging us to be like Hastings. But #LineOfDuty is more than that.

“Seeing Buckells smirk implies he’ll get away with it/those pulling the strings win. Surely there has to be one more series to give us an actual ending?”

Elsewhere, one viewer wrote: “Just me that thinks Ian Buckells is covering for the real 4th man especially with the smirk on his face at the end?? Surely he cant be the real mastermind behind all this [laughing emoji] #LineOfDuty ”.

Finally, one Line of Duty fan concluded by questioning: Do you think we will get a 7th season of #LineOfDuty? Was that smirk from Buckells at the end a little hint?”
