A devoted driver has finally passed their driving test after persevering for 27 years – and credits her eventual pass to a change in mindset.

Catherine Ward spent nearly three decades on a provisional licence but has now been hailed as an ‘inspiration’ to other learner drivers by her instructor Darren Mullane.

He said that Catherine, from Cork, Ireland, repeatedly failed due to ‘small habits’ like coasting and not checking her mirrors when not coming off a roundabout.

But now, on her ninth attempt, Catherine has passed her test and holds a full driving license for the first time in her life.

Speaking on Cork’s REDFM, Catherine said that passing was “the best feeling in the world” and credited her success to a change in mindset.

She said: “Every time I went out on the test it was like I was full of fear, I was very negative – this time I was very positive.

“I couldn’t believe it, I was over the moon. I was nearly starting to give up. I got four or five lessons every time before I went out to do it, the same this time.

“But I went out this time with a positive mind that I would get it. I had it in my mind this year that I wanted to get my licence.”

Darren also spoke on the radio station, and said that Catherine was just one of 250 people who have had a provisional license for over 20 years.

He added: “She’s an inspiration to them and I’m delighted she passed the driving test.”
